Intro to SKPM20 Quantitative methods

SKPM20. HENRIK MERKELSEN

Plan
• HELLO! Short intro. Facts.
• Intro to statistical analysis/SPSS (Camilla)
Teachers
• Henrik Merkelsen (course leader)
Research design
Statistics - SPSS

• Ilkin Mehrabov
Statistics - SPSS
Learning objectives
• Knowledge and understanding
• demonstrate in-depth understanding of the relationship
between different components of the research design
process and quantitative methods,
• demonstrate a basic level of knowledge about statistical
analysis, such as cross tabulation, multivate analysis,
correlation, regression and factor analysis.
Competence and skills
• demonstrate a basic level of ability to choose between and use different
types of statistical analysis, including:
• the ability to use and present descriptive and inferential statistics
appropriately,
• the ability to distinguish between various data types and to select
modes of analysis accordingly.
• demonstrate an ability to design a research project based on quantitative
methods, including:
• situating the research problem in terms of perspective, focus, level and
scope,
• grounding the research problem in theory and reality,
• presenting a research proposition based on conceptually and logically
sound inferences,
• developing a conceptually sound model based on testable hypotheses,
• designing and assessing a survey according to scientific standards,
including developing, modifying or adopting scientifically sound scales,
• conprehensively and transparently present a methodological account of
sample logic, analytical strategy and other relevant aspects,
• clearly stating contribution/implication of the study for science
and for practice.
Judgement and approach
• the ability to critically consider threats to internal,
statistical, external and construct validities,
• critically reflect on the link between research question(s)
and research strategy, including reflections about how the
research proposition relates to other plausible alternatives
as well as to status quo,
• the ability to perspectivize reflections abouts the choosen
research design into a wider epistemic context.

How we are going to work on the
course
Statistics – SPSS Research design
Intro lecture Reading – discussing
Reading – online lecture(s) and – project work
tutorials Lecture/Workshops
Intro lecture to workshop Feedback seminar
Workshop Supervision
2 hour written exam Written group exam
Oral individual exam
The didactic behind this course
• Flipped classroom: preparation, lectures etc. + practical
work here

• Making a research design that works is a very practical

task
• Thus, you learn mainly from the practical experience of
doing it
• Lectures, seminars, workshops and literature can set a
direction and offer some guidelines – but the successful
learning process depends on your commitment to putting
it into practice.
Exam
• A 2h written exam in statistics. Multiple choice – 3 ECTS
A-F
• Group home assignment in research design (research
proposal) – 1 ECTS P/F
• Individual oral exam (20 min.) – 3,5 ECTS
A-F
Grading criteria
• A is given for given for the excellent performance
demonstrating complete fulfillment of the course objectives,
with no or few deficiencies,
• B is given for the very good performance demonstrating
extensive fulfillment of the course objectives, with some
minor deficiencies
• C is given for the good performance demonstrating fulfillment
of course objectives, with various deficiencies,
• D is given for the fair performance demonstrating the
fulfillment of course objectives to a lesser extent, with
several major deficiencies,
• E is given for a performance demonstrating the minimum
acceptable degree of fulfillment of the course objectives,
• F is given for a performance that does not demonstrate an
acceptable degree of fulfillment of the course objectives.
Groups
• 10 groups of 4-5 members
• I have made the groups
• Talk to your group members and agree on a modus
operandum
• Contact Henrik if any problems

Applied statistics and SPSS

AIM: prepare, carry out and understand the results of a multiple regression
analysis

Before that you need to master some basic stuff

- How does SPSS work?
- What is a variable?
- Descriptive analysis (univariate and bivariate)
- Data reduction, recoding, etc

 Easy if you have previous experience, difficult if not

Applied statistics and SPSS

• Using data from a survey conducted as part of the research

project Communicative Organizations
- Ca 8000 respondents
- Real data set with real problems
- Article Falkheimer et al 2017

SPSS – Statistical Package for the Social Sciences

• Originally made in 1968 (!)
• Pros: widely used, windows + drop down menu solution = no ”coding”
necessary
• Cons: expensive, ugly, a bit clumsy
• Other alternatives: Stata, R
• You can download SPSS to your own computer through student.lu.se. If
that doesn’t work you can download a trialversion from IBM until we have
solved the problem. The file with the statistics we will use in the
workshops you find at Canvas.
