Cascode Connection Amplifier

This module discusses compound BJT and FET configurations and their applications. Specifically, it will analyze cascade and cascode configurations, darlington circuits, feedback configurations, and differential amplifiers. The key topics covered are: 1) Cascode configuration uses two transistors where one acts as an input stage providing output to the output collecting stage, improving input-output isolation and bandwidth. 2) Darlington configuration combines two BJT transistors to provide high current gain but low input impedance. 3) Feedback pair and differential amplifiers are also compound configurations analyzed in the module.

Cascode Connection
 Cascode is a technique implied to improve
the performance of the analog circuits.
 The word cascode is initiated in the year
1939 by Frederick Vinton Hunt’s and Roger
Wayne Hickman’s article during the
discussion of voltage stabilizer applications.
 In cascoding, two transistors are used either
BJTs or FETs such that one configuration acts
as an input stage whose output is provided
as input to the output collecting
configuration.
The Basic Cascode

The basic cascode

amplifier consists of
an input common-
emitter (CE)
configuration driving
an output common-
base (CB).
Advantages of Cascode Amplifier
• Cascode improves input-output isolation (or
reverse transmission) as there is no direct coupling
from the output to input. This eliminates the Miller
effect and thus contributes to a much higher
bandwidth.

• The cascode arrangement also offers high gain,

high slew rate, high stability, and high input
impedance. Modified version of the cascode can
also be used as a modulator, particularly for
amplitude modulation
Disadvantages of Cascode
Amplifier
1.The presence of two transistors requires a
high amount of voltage supply.

2. The sufficient amount of drain to source

voltage must be supplied to both the transistor
which strikes lesser the limit on the supply
voltage.
Applications of Cascode Amplifier

The applications of these amplifiers are:

• In the RF tuners, cascode amplifiers are
used.
• Amplitude modulation technique uses
cascoding technique

Slide 12 Cascode Connection

This is a CE – CB combination.
This arrangement provides high input impedance but a low voltage gain.
The low voltage gain reduces the Miller Input Capacitance therefore this combination
works well in high frequency applications.
