● Learn a Discussion Strategy: Express your ideas during a discussion
WHAT KIND OF
MARKETING/ADVERTISING FIELDS
AND TRENDS DO YOU KNOW?
• In an ideal world, you'd know just how your product or business idea would be
perceived before it's released. This knowledge could help you make alterations to
what you're offering for the best possible reception, and better inform your sales
projections and marketing strategy.

• Sadly, you'll never know exactly how what you're selling will be received by your
target audience, which is why companies conduct market research.
But, while mass data collection through surveys provides you with necessary
quantitative information, it doesn't offer as much qualitative insight into your target
market's view or opinion of what you're selling.

This is where a focus group comes in.

5
 Focus groups enable you to conduct qualitative market research on a product, service, or overall
brand image. They enable you to collect constructive feelings, opinions, or perspectives that can help
you ensure your product or service is helpful to its target market, and that your marketing materials
are persuasive.

 A focus group is usually moderated by a representative or representatives of the company, who ask
5-10 questions to the participants over the course of 30-60 minutes, with another facilitator keeping
notes on the focus group questionnaire.
LISTENING STRATEGY

Recognize Lecture Language for Topic and Lecture Plan

 At the beginning of a lecture, a professor usually tells you the topic, or what the lecture is going to be about. A

professor also usually gives students the lecture plan — a general overview of the material and how he or she

plans to present it, like a map of the lecture

 Listen for the words and expressions that professors use to indicate the topic.

 Also, listen for the words and expressions that professors use to indicate the lecture plan.

NOTE-TAKING STRATEGY

Organize Your Notes by Outlining

 Outlining is a way to visually represent the relationships between ideas. Space and indentation show
which ideas are main points and which are supporting points.

 Outlining can help you easily differentiate main points from supporting points so that you can study
more effectively.
OUTLINING METHOD

 The Outline Method of Note Taking provides more structure, making it

possible to still be able to correctly interpret the main issues at a later date.

 People often use bullet points, numbers or arrows to indicate a new

subject or when a new thought is introduced. Every new subject of the
lecture or meeting is set as far to left of the page as possible. All
additional matters that belong to this subject are then tiered to the right
beneath this subject. A new subject is written straight beneath the first
subject. An example is given below.
ORIGIN OF OUTLINE METHOD

Between 1984 and 1995, educational psychologist Kenneth A Kiewra of the University
of Nebraska wrote more than 20 studies on note taking. He is therefore regarded as an
absolute authority in this area. In one of his latest studies, he wrote about the greatest
benefits of taking notes.
WHY IS THE OUTLINE NOTE TAKING METHOD SO
EFFECTIVE?

The outline note taking method has a hierarchical structure. That helps to:

● Identify all clustering points

● To outline the main features of learning material

● Reduce the amount of notes without losing content

ADVANTAGES OF OUTLINING
METHOD

❖ The method ensures that – in addition to the content being written down in a structured way – the relationship between

different subjects is also clearly visible in the notes. This makes it very easy to review matter at a later point.
❖ Another benefit of the outline method is the focus that remains to keep following the lecture or meeting. The method

does not require fast writing skills, because only the main and side issues are noted down. This ensures that all main

issues can be noted down and no valuable information is lost.

❖ There is also less time needed to edit the notes later, as all important information has already been written down.

Students can change the main issues into questions in order to study the material more in-depth.
MORE LISTENING AND NOTE-TAKING
STRATEGIES

 Predict

To help you get ready for new information and to listen more actively, make a prediction about
what the professor will discuss based on what you already know about the topic.

 Assess Your Notes

During a lecture, you can sometimes miss an important idea or piece of information. Compare
notes with classmates in a study group after the lecture to check that your notes are complete.

TASK: NOW IT IS YOUR TURN

What do you think? Are you familiar with the outline note taking method? Are
your notes also structured and effective and do you perhaps achieve this in a
different way?
