Gen. Math-Addition of Functions

Here are the steps to add the given functions: 1. (f+g)(x) = (3x + 3) + (-4x + 1) = 3x + (-4x) + 3 + 1 = -x + 4 2. (f+g)(x) = (2x + 5) + (4x^2 + 2x - 2) = 2x + 4x^2 + 2x + 5 - 2 = 4x^2 + 2x + 3 3. (f+g)(x) = (5x + 1) + (3x - 2) = 5x + 3x + 1 - 2 =

RULE 1: The sum of two positive
integers is a positive integer
1.) 5 + 6 = 11
2.) 2 + 8 = 10
3.) 6 + 9 = 15
RULE 2: The sum of two negative
integers is a negative integer
1.) - 5 + (-6) = -11
2.) - 2 + (-8) = -10
3.) - 6 + (-9) = -15
RULE 3: If the signs are different,
subtract the numbers and use the
sign of the larger number
1.) - 5 + 6 = 1
2.) 2 + (-8) = -6
3.) 6 + (-9) = -3
HOW TO
ADD
FUNCTIONS?
ADD FUNCTIONS
f(x) g(x)
f(x) + g(x)
(f + g) (x)
“f plus g of x”
EXAMPLES:
1. f(x) + g(x) or (f + g) (x)
f(x) = 3x + 2
g(x) = 4 – 5x
ADD FUNCTIONS
f(x) = 3x + 2 g(x) = 4 – 5x
❶(f+g) (x) = (3x+2) + (4 -5x) Write the sum
❷(f+g) (x) = (3x+2) + (-5x + 4) Arrange
METHOD 1 (Horizontal)
(f+g) (x) = (3x+2) + (-5x + 4)
(f+g) (x) = 3x+2 + (-5x) + 4
(f+g) (x) = 3x + (-5x) + 2 + 4
(f+g) (x) = -2x + 6
METHOD 2 (Vertical)
(f+g) (x) = 3x + 2
+ -5x + 4
- 2x + 6
2. Find (f+g) (x)
(fx) = 4x + 2x² - 2
(gx) = 4 – 3x
METHOD 1 (Horizontal)
(f+g) (x) = (2x² + 4x – 2) + (-3x + 4)
(f+g) (x) = 2x² + 4x – 2 + (-3x)+ 4
(f+g) (x) = 2x² + 4x + (-3x) - 2 + 4)
(f+g) (x) = 2x² + x + 2
METHOD 2 (Vertical)
(f+g) (x) = 2x² + 4x – 2
+ - 3x + 4
2x² + x + 2
WHAT YOU NEED TO
REMEMBER
• The sum of functions can be
written as:
f(x) + g(x) or (f + g)(x)
•You can add functions horizontally
or vertically after arranging the
terms according to their degrees.
WHAT YOU NEED TO
REMEMBER
•The steps in adding functions are:
> write the functions into
(f + g) (x) = f(x) + g(x)
> reorder the functions by degree of
terms, and
> add functions horizontally and
vertically
Directions: Find (f+ g) (x) using the two functions
given in each number.
1. f(x) = 3x + 3 4. f(x) = -15x² - 2x + 5
g(x) = - 4x + 1 g(x) = 3x² + x – 7

2. f(x) = 2x + 5 5. f(x) = 3x² - 2x + 1

g(x) = 4x² + 2x - 2 g(x) = 4x² + 5x - 4

3. f(x) = 5x + 1
g(x) = 3x - 2
