Math 7-Operationof Sets Day 2

The document provides examples of set operations including union, intersection, complement using sets A, B, C. It defines key terms like universal set, union, intersection, complement. Examples are worked out including finding elements of unions, intersections, complements of sets shown on Venn diagrams. Practice problems are provided to assess understanding of sets and Venn diagrams.

OBJECTIVE:
● Solve problems involving sets using
Venn diagram;
● Apply set operations to solve a
variety of word problems.
Venn diagram
Venn diagram which was invented by a guy
names John Venn, is a way of picturing relationships
between different sets. Venn diagram can be used to
illustrate both set relationships and logical
relationships.
Sets can be combined in a number of different
ways to produce another set.
1. The union of set S and set T, denoted by S 𝖴 T, is the set whose
elements are contained in either set S or set T, or both. The Venn
diagram shows the shaded part of Set S and Set B. The shaded
part represents the union of the two sets.
2. The intersection of set S and set T, denoted by S ∩ T, is a set
whose elements are contained in both set S and set T. The shaded
part in the Venn diagram below shows the intersection of two sets.
3. The complement of set S, denoted by S’, is the set of all
elements in the universal set that are not in S. Venn diagram shows
the complement of set S.
Write down the element of:
a) the universal set, U = ______________
b) A = _______________
c) B = _______________
d) A U B = _________________
e) A ∩ B = _________________
f) A’ = _______________
g) B’ = _______________
The Venn diagram shows sets U, C and D.
Write down the members of:
a. the universal set, U
b. C ∪ D
c. C ∩ D
d. C’
e. D’
On a Venn diagram show:
A. the whole numbers from 1 to 10
set A where A = {1, 2, 5, 10}
set B where B = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10}
B. the whole numbers from 15 to 21
set P where P = {15, 18, 21}
set Q where Q = {16, 18, 20}
Determine whether the statement is TRUE or FALSE.
1. The union of set A and set B, denoted by A 𝖴 B, includes elements
from both set S and set T, or both.
2. The intersection of set S and set T, denoted by S ∩ T, consists of
elements that are present in both set S and set T.
3. The complement of a set, A, is another set that consists of all the
elements in the universal set that are not in the set A.
4. Venn diagrams are primarily used to illustrate logical relationships
between sets.
5. Mark Venn is credited with inventing the Venn diagram as a visual
tool for depicting relationships between different sets.
Choose the letter of the correct answer for each question.

C. { 2, 4, 6} D. { 1, 3, 5 }
2. Find A ∩ B.
A. { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 } B. { 2, 4, 5, 6
}
