• Similar to any substance, food is made of different molecules.
• The molecules that make up food are referred to as nutrients.
• More specifically, a nutrient is defined as a chemical substance found in
food, which fulfil a specific roles to help maintain the body.

1. Provide energy
2. Promote growth and development

• All nutrients are found in food, but not all food contain all nutrients:
• Everyone needs all nutrients, but not always in similar amounts

The amount (quantity) of nutrients each person needs depends on:


1. Age
2. Sex
3. Genetic Background
4. Body Size

• As mentioned, nutrients are found in foods and have specific functions
in the body.
• Nutrition is the study of how the body uses those nutrients to perform
various functions!
