Standardized Testing

Standardized tests aim to measure students' knowledge or abilities in a consistent way. They require standardized questions, scoring, administration, and interpretation. A good standardized test specifies the competencies to be measured and uses a validated process to design tasks targeting those competencies. Common standardized tests include the SAT, GRE, and GMAT. While they can objectively measure achievement, critics argue they narrow curriculum and prioritize test preparation over learning. Tests are developed by determining their purpose and objectives, designing test specifications, and selecting and arranging validated test items. Common English proficiency tests are TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB, and TOEIC, which vary in acceptance, components, and validation periods.
