Learning outcome
• Define computer software
• State two main categories of software and
their relationships
SOFTWARE
• a series of statements or instructions to
the computer.
• The process of writing programs is termed
programming,
• Individuals who specialize in this task are
called programmers.
Two major types of software
1. System software
• set of generalized programs that manage the
computer’s resources, such as the central
processor, communications links, and peripheral
devices.
• Programmers who write system software are called
system programmers.
2. Application software
• written for or by users to apply the computer to a
specific task.
• Programmers who write application software are
called application programmers.
The relationship between system and application software
2. Application Software
• Software – Computer program
• Application Software - A prewritten, precoded, commercially
available set of programs that eliminates the need to write software
programs for certain functions
A) WORD PROCESSING SOFTWARE
– Word processing software, stores text data electronically as a
computer file rather than on paper.
– The word processing software allows the user to make
changes in the document electronically in memory. This
eliminates the need to retype an entire page to incorporate
corrections. The software has formatting options to make
changes in line spacing, margins, character size, and column
width.
– Microsoft Word and WordPerfect are popular word processing
packages
– Applications include writing letters, reports, books
2. Application Software
B) SPREADSHEETS
• Software displaying data in a grid of columns and rows,
with the capability of easily recalculating numerical data.
• Electronic spreadsheet software provides computerized
versions of traditional financial modeling tools, such as
the accountant’s columnar pad, pencil, and calculator.
• An electronic spreadsheet is organized into a grid of
columns and rows.
• Application – calculations,accounting, mathematical
models
• Examples include microsoft excel, lotus 1-2-3
2. Application Software
C) DATABASE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE
• Used to store, sort, search and retrieve
information
• example is Microsoft access
D) DESKTOP PUBLISHING
• Allows users to look at a page of the document as
a whole and design the layout by marking areas
for text and graphics
• All these features can be put together to produce
newsletters, posters, pages of a book etc
2. Application Software
E) PRESENTATION PACKAGES
• Software to create professional quality graphics
presentations that can incorporate charts,
sound, animation, photos, and video clips.
EMAIL SOFTWARE
• Electronic mail (e-mail) is used for the computer-
to-computer exchange of messages and is an
important tool for communication and
collaborative work. A person can use a
networked computer to send notes or lengthier
documents to a recipient on the same network or
a different network
• Example is Microsoft outlook
2. Application Software
WEB BROWSER
• Web browsers are easy-to-use software
tools for displaying Web pages and for
accessing the Web and other Internet
resources
• Example is internet explorer
Summary
• Write instructions or commands
• Application performs a specific task e.g.
Microsoft word, PowerPoint
• systems software controls input,
processing, storage and output e.g.
Microsoft windows
