Introduction
What is Communication?
• Sharing of information, ideas, and messages between two or more
people.
What is Local Communication?
• Being able to communicate with the members of your local
area.
What is Global Communication?
• The development and sharing of information, through
verbal and non-verbal messages, in international
settings and contexts.
What is
Culture?
• According to Martin & Nakayama (2010),
culture is defined as the “learned patterns
and attitudes shared by a group of people.
• Geert Hofstede (1984), a noted social
psychologist, said that culture is “the
programming of the mind.”
What do you mean by multicultural settings?
• Multicultural refers to a society that contains
several cultural or ethnic groups. People live
alongside one another, but each cultural group
does not necessarily have engaging interactions
with each other.
CULTURAL DIVERSITY
• Cultural diversity is about appreciating
that society is made up of many
different groups with different
interests, skills, talents and needs.
INTERCULTURAL
COMMUNICATION
• Intercultural communication is a
symbolic, interpretive, transactional,
contextual process, in which people
from different cultures create shared
meanings. (Lustig & Koester,
2007:46)
Forms of Intercultural
Communication
• Interracial Communication - communicating with people from
different races.
• Interethnic Communication - interacting with people from
different ethnic origin.
• International Communication - communicating between
representatives from different nations.
• Intracultural Communication - interacting with members of the
same racial or ethnic group or co-culture.
Communication Styles
(Gamble & Gamble, 2008)
• High-context Communication - tradition-linked
communication system which adheres strongly to
being indirect.
• Low-context Communication - system that works
on straightforward communication.
