Sampling

This document discusses different sampling techniques used in research. It describes probability sampling methods like simple random sampling, stratified random sampling, random cluster sampling, and systematic sampling, where samples are selected randomly from a population. It also describes non-probability sampling techniques like convenience sampling, quota sampling, and snowball sampling, where samples are selected non-randomly based on the researcher's judgment. The key aspects of selecting appropriate sampling frames and samples to represent populations are also highlighted.

Research

Sampling
Techniques
Sampling

• Method or process of selecting respondents or

people to answer questions meant to yield data for a
research study

Population
 The bigger group from where you choose the samples

Sampling Frame
 The list of members of such population from where you will get the
sample
Probability sampling

Also called Unbiased Sampling

Sampling technique in which the researcher chooses
samples from a larger population using a method based on
the theory of probability
The members of the populations all have equal chance of
getting selected as a sample
The samples are randomly selected from the population
Non Probability sampling

This sampling technique can be used

When reducing sampling bias

When the population is usually diverse

To create an accurate sample

Types of Probability Sampling
Simple Random Sampling
Entirely random method of selecting the sample
This techniques is applicable if the target population is
large
Types of Probability Sampling
Stratified Random Sampling
Involves a method where the researcher divides a more
extensive population into smaller groups that usually don’t
overlap, but represent the entire population
e.g. arrange by sex, age, ethnicity, etc.
Types of Probability Sampling
Random Cluster Sampling
A way to select participants randomly that are spread out
geographically
e.g. randomly select from a randomly selected city
Types of Probability Sampling
Systematic Sampling
Iwhen you choose the ‘nth’ individual to be a part of the
sample.
e.g. arrange by sex, age, ethnicity, etc.
Steps in Probability Sampling

1. Choose your population of interest carefully

2. Determine a suitable sample frame

3. Select your sample and start your survey

Non Probability sampling

Sampling technique in which the researcher chooses

samples based on the subjective judgment of the researcher
It is a less strict method
not all members of the population have an equal chance of
participating in the study
Each member of the population has a known chance of
being selected
Non Probability sampling

This sampling technique can be used

To indicate if a particular trait or characteristic exists in a population

For pilot studies or exploratory research

When the researcher needs to observe whether a particular issue

needs in-depth analysis

When you do not intend to generate results that will generalize the
entire population
Types of Non-Probability Sampling
Convenience Sampling
samples are selected from the population only because
they are conveniently available to the researcher
Researchers choose these samples just because they are
easy to recruit, and the researcher did not consider
selecting a sample that represents the entire population.
Types of Non-Probability Sampling
Consecutive Sampling
the researcher picks a single person or a group of a
sample, conducts research over a period, analyzes the
results, and then moves on to another subject or group if
needed.
Types of Non-Probability Sampling
Quota Sampling
To understand better about a population, the researcher
will need only a sample, not the entire population.
the researcher is interested in particular strata within the
population.
Types of Non-Probability Sampling
Judgmental or Purposive Sampling
select the samples based purely on the researcher’s
knowledge and credibility.
researchers choose only those people who they deem fit to
participate in the research study.
Types of Non-Probability Sampling
Snowball Sampling
helps researchers find a sample when they are difficult to
locate.
Researchers use this technique when the sample size is
small and not easily available.
