What are Minerals!
A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic solid, with a definite chemical
composition, and an ordered atomic arrangement.

● Minerals are naturally occurring

They are not made by humans

● Minerals are inorganic

They have never been alive and are not made up from plants or animals

● Minerals are solids

They are not liquids (like water), or gases (like the air around you)

WHAT ARE PRECIOUS MINERALS
Precious metals are rare, naturally occurring metallic chemical elements of high economic
value. Chemically, the precious metals tend to be less reactive than most elements. They
are usually ductile and have a high lustre

How precious Minerals are formed:

Rock is worn down, and fragments of mineral rich water and wind seeps down into the
cracks and cavities in the Earth's surface, depositing layers of minerals which are then
compressed over time, forming gemstones

They are sometimes produced as a by product of minerals from the production of Ores

TYPES OF PRECIOUS MINERALS
While there are many types of precious minerals the three main types are Gold,
Silver and Platinum
GOLD
Native gold is an element and a mineral.
It is highly prized by people because of its
attractive color, its rarity, resistance to
tarnish, and its many special properties -
some of which are unique to gold. No
other element has more uses than gold.

Gold may occur as deposits called lodes,

or veins, in fractured rock. It may also
be dispersed within Earth's crust. Most
lode deposits form when heated fluids
circulate through gold-bearing rocks,
picking up gold and concentrating it in
new locations in the crust.
Silver
Pure silver is nearly white, lustrous, soft, very
ductile, malleable, it is an excellent conductor of
heat and electricity. It is not a chemically active
metal, but it is attacked by nitric acid (forming the
nitrate) and by hot concentrated sulfuric acid.

Silver is formed from sulfur compounds within the

earth where its crust heats up to between 200- and
400-degrees Fahrenheit. In nature, silver is found
combined with other metals, or in minerals with silver
compounds. These minerals typically include sulfides
like cerussite or galena.
Platinum
A very heavy, precious, silver-white metal,
platinum is soft and ductile and has a high
melting point and good resistance to corrosion
and chemical attack.

Platinum is formed when minerals are eroded

from their original spot and then carried by
water somewhere else (this is called stream bed
mining or alluvial mining). Workers sift through the
sand or mud looking for gold, diamonds or
platinum. Nowadays, platinum is more likely to be
mined as ore from deep underground.

Structure and
uses of clay
structures of clay
● The atomic structure of the clay minerals consists of two basic
units, an octahedral sheet and a tetrahedral sheet. The
octahedral sheet is comprised of closely packed oxygen's and
hydroxyls in which aluminum, iron, and magnesium atoms are
arranged in octahedral coordination.
USES OF CLAY
● Bricks, cooking pots, art
objects, dishware and even
musical instruments such as the
ocarina are all made with clay.
Clay is also used in many
industrial processes, such as
paper making, cement
production, pottery, and
chemical filtering.
ACTIVITY
● Group 1 and 2 will form 2 teams Each team will take turns
answering questions(starting from group 1)If a team fails to answer a
question correctly, the opposing team has a chance to answer the
question and win a point The team with the most points win a special
prize which will be revealed when a team wins
