Science Writing

What is Science Writing?

 The term science writing refers to writing about a
scientific subject matter, often in a non-technical manner
for an audience of non-scientists (a form of journalism or
creative nonfiction). Also called popular science writing.
 Science writing may also refer to writing that reports
scientific observations and results in a manner governed
by specific conventions (a form of technical writing).
More commonly known as scientific writing.
Elements in Science Writing
•Precision: ambiguities in writing cause confusion
and may prevent a reader from grasping
crucial aspects of the methodology and
synthesis
•Clarity: concepts and methods in the sciences can often
be complex; writing that is difficult to follow
greatly amplifies any confusion on the part of the
reader
•Objectivity: any claims that you make need to be based
on facts, not intuition or emotion

TIPS IN GOOD SCIENCE WRITING
 There should be an element of surprise.
- Avoid talking the topic in the first paragraph.
 Concentrate on your topic. If it’s all about science

then it must be about science and health.

 Can start with “hugot lines” (e.g. “Trapiko, ikaw ang
pumupuno ng _____ sa ilong ko!)
 Avoid using first person, rather always use the 3rd
person to avoid personal bias or subjectivity. However,
never use “we” in a way that includes the reader
(e.g., “here we see trait evolution in action”)
 Be different. Use an association words that cannot
be used by others or many.
 Definition of topic can be much better to use and
write at the middle of writing engagement.
 Never raise a question at the beginning of the
paragraph.
 Punchline must be convincing. (e.g. A not so
friendly insect cockroach that contributes a
balancing factor in an eco-system.)
 Make use of figurative language METAPHOR rather
than simile. (e.g. Love is a battlefield)
• Level of detail/ Writing should be informative
Include as much detail as is necessary, but
exclude extraneous information that could not
be applicable to the topic. The reader
should be able to easily follow the
methodology, results, and logic without being
distracted by irrelevant facts and descriptions.
• Writing should be conversational (magaan)
Sample complex and simple words in
SCIENCE WRITING

COMPLEX SIMPLE
efficacious effective
utilize use
elucidate explain
proximal close
Leave a distinct description or use
the story characters to incorporate
in the writing. (e.g. “para akong si
Snow White” na sa matagal na
pagkakahimbing ay nawala sa
sirkulasyon ng kinagisnan kong
bayan”)
 Give the idea of CONTRAST
 One important thing is to make a facts
sheet of different topics/current events
and let our contestants memorize each
facts.
As they memorize, they should also be
updated of the facts and news about them
Have them READ… WRITE….READ &
WRITE….
They should READ &
WRITE now and then for
them to be FACTUAL with
their write-ups.
