Effective Overview
DYNAMIC CHARTS

This type of charts shows the changes of

figures over time.

So, what we are asked to do?

• Analyze important figures.

• Make appropriate comparisons.

RESPONSE'S STRUCTURE

 INTRODUCTION

An effective introduction should provide

information about "What", "Where", and
"When".

Looking at the graph, can you analyze

these three pieces of information?
RESPONSE'S STRUCTURE

• What:
The number of enquiries received by the
Tourist Information Office
• Where:
In one city
• When:
Over a six-month period in 2011
RESPONSE'S STRUCTURE

Now, let's paraphrase these "What",

"Where", and "When"!!

"The given chart compares the

number of inquiries sent to the Tourist
Information Office in a city from
January to June in 2011."
RESPONSE'S STRUCTURE
 OVERVIEW
This is the most important paragraph in the whole response.

→ Failing to write an effective Overview would stop you from achieving a

band higher than 5 in Task Achievement!!

So, what to do in this part?

Your Overview should address 2 to 3 main features of the given graph.

→ DO NOT MENTION ANY SPECIFIC DATA IN THIS PART!!!

LIST OF MAIN FEATURES

 TREND

This is the most important feature in every Dynamic graph.

→ Your first sentence in the Overview is always about the trend!

There are two steps to find the overall trend of the graph
• Find the trends of each line of figures by comparing its starting and
ending points.
• Compare the number of upward and downward trends.
LIST OF MAIN FEATURES

So, what is the trend of this

graph?

• France: Upward
• Russia: Downward
• America: Upward

→ Overall trend: Upward

TEMPLATE
Here are several templates you can use to describe trend:

• Overall, there was an increase in the figures of ___; meanwhile, a decrease was
seen in the case of ___.
• Overall, ___ witnessed an upward trend, while ___ experienced a decrease.
• Overall, it is apparent that the figures of ___ increased over the examined
period while an opposite trend was seen in the case of ___.
IN – CLASS PRACTICE

Overall, there was an

increase in the number of
Vietnamese students
pursuing their studies in
France and America;
meanwhile, a decrease
was seen in the case of
Russia.
LIST OF MAIN FEATURES

 DIFFERENCE

This feature occurs when a

line of figures exceeds of is
exceeded by others in all
years examined.
TEMPLATE

Here are several templates you can use to describe difference:

• Added to this, the figures of ___ seemed to exceed all others by a far distance
in all years examined.

• Added to this, the ___ was far higher than that of ___ in all years shown.
LIST OF MAIN FEATURES

Added to this, the monthly

number of visitors to British
museum seemed to exceed
that of the remaining two
museums by a far distance in
all months examined.
LIST OF MAIN FEATURES

 DRASTIC CHANGE

This feature includes specific

sudden changes in figures that
alter the overall trend of its line
and fluctuation.
TEMPLATE

Here are several templates you can use to describe drastic changes:

• Added to this, following a __ is the occurrence of a abrupt upward/downward

turn in the __ in __.

• Added to this, the __ underwent a period of major/minor fluctuation from __

to __.
LIST OF MAIN FEATURES

Added to this, following a

moderate decline is the
occurrence of an abrupt upward
turn in the emission of nitrogen
oxide of buses from the speed
range of 60.
LIST OF MAIN FEATURES

 STABILITY

This feature occurs when the line

of figures progresses stably
without facing any significant
changes.
TEMPLATE

Here are several templates you can use to describe stability:

• Added to this, the __ remained relatively stable, with only slight variations
observed in __.

• Added to this, the __ exhibited a consistent pattern, with minor fluctuations

detected in __.
LIST OF MAIN FEATURES

Added to this, changes in the

portions of this country's budget
across all five categories remained
relatively stable without any signs
of variations throughout the
examined timeframe.
LIST OF MAIN FEATURES

 PEAK AND VALLEY

It is important to acknowledge the highest point (peak) and the lowest point
(valley) of the graph.

Here is the template to describe this feature:

• Added to this, the highest __ was recorded in the __ in __. On the other hand,
the __ witnessed the lowest __.
LIST OF MAIN FEATURES

Added to this, the highest number

of visitors was recorded in British
museum in July. On the other
hand, the Science museum
witnessed the lowest number of
visits in August.
LIST OF MAIN FEATURES
 TREND AND DIFFERENCE:

Overall, there was a relatively

gradual increase in book expenditures
across all countries. Added to this,
Germany's spending far exceeded that
of the other countries in all examined
years.
KEY DETAILS

Remember, you MUST NOT So, what are the key details we need to
cover all data shown in the cover?
graph. • Peak and Valley of the graph
• Notable starting and ending points
→ Only mention important
• Surpassing points (changes in rank)
information!
• Drastic changes
• Comparison of major differences among
data and patterns
IN – CLASS PRACTICE
 Write down all the key details in this graph.
MODEL ANSWER

 Germany, the U.S., and India

Starting at roughly 17%, the proportion of

Germany witnessed a drastic rise,
promptly surpassing the figures India and
overtaking the leading position of the U.S.
before the year of 2011. In 2013, the figure
of Germany reached its peak at 25%,
exceeding that of the U.S. and India by
approximately 4% and 8% respectively.
MODEL ANSWER

 Spain, France, and China.

Unlike the mentioned three countries, Spain,

France, and China were marginally less reliant on
renewable power. Both the figures of Spain and
France experienced a stable progression in all
years, raising from roughly 12% to 15% after 3
years. Meanwhile, although experiencing a
moderate rise in the first year, China's final figure
was still 3% lower than that of Spain and France.
STATIC CHARTS
This type of chart shows figures in a
specific year.

→ All figures undergo no change.

So, how is this different from Dynamic
charts?

→ There is no movement and we

MUST avoid using words that describe
changes.
RESPONSE'S STRUCTURE

 OVERVIEW

There are some changes in the list of main features:

• Difference (large differences among data)

• Pattern

• Peak and Valley (point and sum)

IN – CLASS PRACTICE
MODEL ANSWER

Transportation accounted for the
largest portions of the budgets in all
countries. Notably, the United
Kingdom allocated the lowest
proportion of its budget to Health
care, placing it at the bottom of the
chart.
