Collision Theory - Edited

The collision theory states that a chemical reaction occurs when reactant particles collide with proper orientation and sufficient kinetic energy to overcome the activation energy barrier. The rate of reaction depends on factors that influence the frequency of effective collisions between reactants, including temperature, concentration, surface area, and presence of catalysts. Higher temperatures increase particle movement and kinetic energy, while higher concentrations and surface areas provide more opportunities for collisions between reactants. Catalysts also increase the reaction rate by reducing the activation energy needed for reactions to proceed.

Chemical Change I

The Collision Theory and

the Rate of Reaction
What is a Collision Theory??
• The collision theory states that a chemical
reaction can only occur between particles
when they collide (hit each other).
• the rate of a chemical reaction is directly
proportional to the number of collisions
between the reactants.
Requirement:
• Proper orientation
• Meet higher activation
energy
Proper Orientation
Meet higher activation energy
• Activation energy or energy barrier – is the energy needed
to be surpassed by the reactants for a reaction to occur.
*For an effective collision – need to meet an energy
higher than activation energy
to have a sufficient kinetic energy for a reaction
to occur.
Reaction Rate
• Reaction Rate - defines as how quickly
or slowly a reaction
takes place.
• Factors affecting reaction rate:
1.Temperature
2.Concentration
3. Surface area
4. Presence of catalyst
1. Temperature

Temperature
=
particle movement
kinetic energy

Reaction rate
2. Concentration
3. Surface Area ( particle size)

Larger surface area would have a larger

space of collision between particles of a
reaction.
4. Presence of a catalyst
• Catalyst – a substance that makes a chemical
reaction faster
