Adding and Subtracting Fractions PowerPoint

Here is a 5-step guide for adding and subtracting fractions: 1. Convert any mixed numbers to improper fractions. Write the fractions being added or subtracted as improper fractions. 2. Find the lowest common denominator (LCD) of the fractions. This will be the common denominator used. 3. Write each fraction with the LCD as its denominator by multiplying the numerator and denominator by the necessary amount. This gives equivalent fractions. 4. With the fractions now having a common denominator, simply add or subtract the numerators. 5. Write your final answer as an improper or mixed number, depending on the value of the numerator over the denominator.

Adding and Subtracting Fractions with
Different Denominators
2 chairs + 3 chairs = 5 chairs
7 rulers – 5 rulers = 2 rulers

What would 2 chairs + 7 rulers be?

We can’t add them together because they aren’t the same object. We can only add
them together when they are the same. This is the same for fractions.

At the moment you can’t add these fractions together because they have different
denominators.

Remember, they must have the same denominator before you can add the fractions
together.

What could we do to the fractions so we can add them?
