ANTI SLEEP ALARM
FOR DRIVERS
USING AURDINO TECHNOLOGY
Introduction

Drowsiness is a major cause of road accidents. It is estimated that drowsy

driving accounts for 20-30% of all fatal car crashes in the United States. An
anti-sleep alarm for drivers using Arduino is a device that can help to prevent
drowsiness-related accidents.
 The Arduino is a microcontroller board that can be used to create a variety
of electronic devices, including anti-sleep alarms. The Arduino is relatively
inexpensive and easy to use, making it a good choice for building a DIY
anti-sleep alarm..
Existing System

The existing system of an anti-sleep alarm for drivers using Arduino is

typically composed of the following components:
Arduino board: This is the microcontroller that controls the entire system.
Eye blink sensor: This sensor detects the driver’s eye blinks.
 Buzzer: This device emits a loud sound to alert the driver if they start to
fall asleep.
Proposed System

The proposed system of an anti-sleep alarm for drivers using Arduino is a simple
and effective way to prevent drowsiness-related accidents. The system consists of
the following components.
Arduino Nano

Eye blink sensor

Buzzer

Switch

9V battery
 Jumper wires

 The system can be programmed to set different thresholds for the blink rate and
the duration of the alarm. For example, the system could be programmed to
trigger the alarm after 5 seconds if the blink rate falls below 10 blinks per minute.
Literature Survey

 Drowsy driving is a serious problem that can lead to accidents and

fatalities. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA), drowsy driving caused an estimated 91,000 crashes in 2020,
resulting in 5,007 deaths.
 Anti-sleep alarms are devices that can help to prevent drowsy driving
accidents by alerting drivers when they show signs of falling asleep. These
devices can use a variety of sensors to detect drowsiness, such as eye
movement, head position, and steering patterns.
Advantages

 Low cost: Arduino is a relatively inexpensive microcontroller, making it a

good choice for budget-minded DIYers.
 Easy to use: Arduino is designed to be user-friendly, with a large and active
community of users who can provide support and guidance.
 Effective: Anti-sleep alarms have been shown to be effective in reducing
drowsy driving accidents.
 Can be used by drivers of all ages and experience levels.
Disadvantages

 False alarms: The alarm may go off even if the driver is not actually falling
asleep. This can be caused by blinking less often due to fatigue, or by
closing the eyes to rub them or look away from the road.

 Technical failure: The alarm may not work properly if there is a problem
with the Arduino or the sensors.
