WHAT IS DRUG AND DRUG ABUSE?

Drug is a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when injected or
otherwise introduced into the body

Drug abuse is the use of illegal drugs or the use of prescription or- over- the –counter
drug for purposes other than those for which they are meant to be used or in large
amount
CLASSIFICATION OF DRUGS

Psychotropic drugs :These are mood alternating drugs which effects behavior and
mental activity of a person

Psychedelic drugs :These drugs also called hallucinogens, produce a dream like state
with the disorientation and loss of contact with the reality. They make users see sound
and hear colour

The commonly abused drugs are opiods, cannabinoids,cocaine


OPIOIDS

 These are drugs which bind to specific opioid receptors present in


our central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract
 Eg:morphine&heroine
 Morphine :Extracted from the latex of poppy plant
 Heroine :commonly called smack is chemically diacetylmorphine
which is a white, odourless, bitter, crystalline compound. Heroine
is obtained by acetylation Of Morphine

CANNABINOIDS

 These are a group of chemicals which interact with the cannabinoid receptors present
mainly in the brain.
 Natural cannabinoids are obtained from the inflorescence of cannabis sativa
 The flower, tops, leaves, resins, of cannabis plant in various various combinations are
used to produce marjuana, hashish, chara, ganja.
 These drugs are generally taken by inhalation and oral ingestion
 They affects the cardiovascular system

COCA ALKALOID OR COCAINE

 It is obtained from coco plant, erythroxylum coca native to South


America.
 It interfere with the transport the neurotransmitter dopamine.
 Cocaine is commonly called as coke or crack is usually snorted .
 It stimulates central nervous systems producing euphoria and increased
energy.
 It’s excessive dosage causes hallucination.
 Eg: Atropa belladona, Datura .

Uses of drugs in medical field

Barbiturates,amphetamines,benzodiazepines, :for
depression, insomnia

Morphine: sedative and painkiller, for patients who


have undergone surgery
Tobacco
 It is smoked chewed or used as a snuff
 Itcontains nikottin an alkaloid which stimulates the
adrenal gland to release adrenaline and non adrenaline
into blood circulation
 Adrenaline and non adrenaline increases blood pressure
and the heartbeat
 Tobacco chewing causes oral cancer
Smoking can cause lung cancer Bronchitis coronary heart
disease cancer of throat cancer of urinary bladder etc.
Smoking increases carbon monoxide Contender thus
causing oxygen deficiency
Adolescence and drug abuse

 Adolescence is a period and process during which a child


becomes nature in terms of attitude and believes for effective
participation in society
 It is a valuable phase of mental and physiological development of
an individual
Causes of drug and alcohol abuse in youngsters

 Curiosity
 Need of adventure
 Excitement
 Experimentation
 To escape facing problems
 Stress from parents to excel in academic or examination
unsupportive family structure and peer pressure
Effect of drug abuse or alcohol abuse

 Reckless behaviour, when the listen and violence are some adverse effects of drugs and
alcohol abuse
 Effects of overdose of drugs lead to coma and death due to respiratory failure heart failure
of cerebral hemorrhage
