Warm Up!

With a partner, read the following passage and encircle all


words that are possibly misspelled. Afterward, correct these
misspelled words.

Somedy, I will eventualy move forwerd and be happy with the


choices I made. I will have the oppurtunity to become a beter
person and live my best life. I will be successfull, and I will be
okay.

2. There are English words that have variant or alternate


spellings, which are acceptable. However, you should
consult the dictionary to help you decide which form to
use. Usually, the main entry word in a dictionary shows the
standard spelling, and the variant spellings of the word
are indicated. For convenience and consistency, use the
spelling of the entry word.

3. Words with the letters i and e succeeding each other, such


as receive, receipt, and deceive are commonly misspelled.
Remember then this simple rule:

I before E except after C

Examples: perceive, conceive, deceit, conceit

4. In adding prefixes to words, the spelling of the root


word does not change.

Examples:
misinterpret, replay, illiterate, unavailable

5. English words with double letters are often misspelled. Be


aware of those words and remember their correct spellings.

a. Words with a single pair of double letters


Examples: announcement, cigarette, illiterate, immodest,
occasion
b. Words with two pairs of double letters
Examples: address, access, coffee, balloon, assess

6. There are English words that contain silent letters, which


are not pronounced when the words are read. Be aware of
those words and remember their correct spellings. Below
are some words with silent consonants.
Examples:
silent g: flight, sight, right
silent c: muscle, scent, Science
silent t: whistle, listen, wrestle
silent p: receipt, psychology, psychiatrist
silent k: knuckle, knit, knight

Correct spelling is very important in order to make your


writing meaningful and beautiful. Applying this to your
life, what are the aspects of your life that you should
correct in order to make it meaningful and beautiful?
Synthesis

1. Form groups of five.


2. Pretend that that you are a team that writes speeches for
political campaigns. In 2022, a famous politician will run
for president and he hired your team to write one of his
political speeches addressed to people living in Metro
Manila in one of his future campaigns.
3. With your groupmates, draft a three-minute speech for
the politician. Make sure to observe correct spelling of
words.

4. After the activity, choose one member of the group to


pretend that he or she is a politician and read the
speech aloud in front of the class.
5. Answer the following questions:
a. How did the activity enrich your learning on spelling?
b. What was the hardest part of the activity? Why was this
challenging?
c. What notable experiences did you have while
