Report CMPM

The document discusses Building Information Modeling (BIM) and its benefits for the construction industry. It defines BIM as a process for generating and managing physical and functional information during a building's lifecycle using electronic models. The key benefits mentioned are better collaboration, coordination to prevent clashes, improved cost estimation, visualization during planning, and safer, more efficient construction. It also outlines different levels of BIM implementation and applications such as 3D, 4D, 5D, and beyond to facilitate tasks like scheduling, cost estimation, energy analysis, and safety planning.

BIM
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING

 is the process spanning the

generation and management of
the physical and functional
information of a project.
BIM
BUILDING INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

 is the process of designing,

constructing and operating a
building with the use of electronic
object-orientated information, i.e.
Building Information Models.
TYPICAL PROBLEMS IN
CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY
VISUALIZATION &
COMMUNICATION COORDINATION

CHANGE ORDERS COST UNCERTAINTY

COMMUNICATION WITHIN TEAMS UNSAFE CONSTRUCTION SITE

COMMUNICATION BETWEEN POOR PLANNING & PROJECT

STAKEHOLDERS DELAYS
BENEFITS OF BIM IN
CONSTRUCTION

 BETTER COLLABORATION AND

COMMUNICATION
 MODEL-BASED COST ESTIMATION
 PRECONSTRUCTION PROJECT VISUALIZATION
 IMPROVED COORDINATION AND CLASH
DETECTION
 REDUCED COST AND MITIGATED RISK
 IMPROVED SCHEDULING/SEQUENCING
 INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY AND
PREFABRICATION
 SAFER CONSTRUCTION SITES
 BETTER BUILDS
 STRONGER FACILITY MANAGEMENT AND
BUILDING HANDOVER
BETTER COLLABORATION AND
COMMUNICATION

 BIM’s key role is to facilitate

communication and mutual
understanding within
project stakeholders and
the construction teams.
 It changes the common way
of collaboration including
the roles of project
participants.
MODEL-BASED COST ESTIMATION

 It automates the time

consuming task of
quantifying and applying
costs, allowing estimators
to focus on higher value
factors, such as identifying
construction assemblies
and factoring risks.
PRECONSTRUCTION PROJECT
VISUALIZATION

 By using BIM, you can plan and

visualize the entire project
during preconstruction before
the shovel hits the ground.
Having a greater overview from
the beginning minimizes
expensive and time-consuming
changes later.
IMPROVED COORDINATION AND
CLASH DETECTION

 BIM allows you to

better coordinate
trades and
subcontractors,
defecting any MEP,
internal, or external
clashes before
construction begins.
REDUCED COST AND MITIGATED RISK

 Better overview of the

project before starting
allows for more
prefabrication and
reduces waste on
unused materials.
IMPROVED
SCHEDULING/SEQUENCING

 BIM allows design

and documentation
to be done at the
same time, and for
documentation to be
easily changed to
adapt to new
information such as
site conditions.
INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY AND
PREFABRICATION

 By designing,
detailing and
building offsite in a
controlled
environment, you
can diminish waste,
increase efficiency,
and reduce labor
and material costs.
SAFER CONSTRUCTION SITES

 Visual risk analysis and safety evaluations can

help ensure safety over the course of the
project execution.
BETTER BUILDS

 By sharing common BIM

tools, more experienced
team members work
together with builders
through all phases of the
project, providing better
control over technical
decisions around design
execution.
STRONGER FACILITY MANAGEMENT
AND BUILDING HANDOVER

 Using construction
software, an accurate
ongoing digital record of
building information is
valuable for facilities
management and
renovators for the entire
lifecycle of the building.
Closed BIM: Use of software tools of one single
vendor and proprietary formats for data
exchange.

Open BIM: the application uses non-proprietary,

neutral file formats.

Little BIM: Isolated use of software tools to

solve specific tasks.

Big BIM: Integrated use of a digital building

model among different disciplines throughout
the asset life cycle.
LEVELS OF MATURITY OF BIM

 LEVEL O – it means no collaboration. The 2D CAD

drafting only is utilized, mainly for production
information. It describes unmanaged CAD (computer
aided design)
 LEVEL 1 – this typically comprises a mixture of 3D CAD
for concept of work, and 2D for drafting of statutory
approval documentation and production information.
It describes managed CAD in 2D and 3D.
 LEVEL 2 – it involves developing building information
in a collaborative 3D environment with data attached,
but created in separate disciple models.
 LEVEL 3 – it has yet to be defined in detail, but it is
thought that it will include a single, collaborative,
online, project model including construction
sequencing, cost and life-cycle management
information.
BIM APPLICATIONS
3D MODEL
VISUALIZATION MODEL

 images that result

in a real-time
graphical
simulation of the
construction
progress.
4D MODEL
TIME MODEL

 enables the
evaluation of the
buildability and
workflow
planning of the
project.
5D MODEL
COST MODEL

 This improves the

accuracy of estimates,
minimizes dispute
incidents that CAD data
usually causes, and
allows cost consultants
to spend more time on
improving value.
6D MODEL
ENERGY MODEL

 adding rich description of

building elements and
engineering services with
elaborate descriptions to the
geometry, relationships, and
property capabilities make
the BIM a perfect facilities
management database.
7D MODEL
FACILITY MANAGEMENT

 it allows for
professionals/designers
to meet carbon targets
for a specific element of
project and validate
decisions or test and
compare options.
8D MODEL
SAFETY MODEL

 incorporates
safety aspects in
both the design
and the
construction
process.
