GLADIATORS
DICTIONARY
'Gladius' is the latin word for
'sword'. It is thought that this is
the root of the word 'gladiator' .
Gladiators were warriors who were
trained to fight in order to entertain
crowds of people. They would fight
other gladiators, sometimes to the
death.
The clothing of a gladiator was usually
minimal. Sheilds and helmets were use
for protection.
Sandals and a canvas loincloth, called a
subligaculum, were worn.
Most gladiators were criminals,
prisoners of war or slaves, chosen
for their strength and skill,
although some people
volunteered to fight.
A If they survive for 3 years, a
gladiator who started as a slave
could win his freedom.
Gladiators were trained at special
schools called ludi, where they were
taught different fighting styles, and
how to use a range of weapons.
They received 3 meals a day and
medical attention if needed.
Gladiator fights took part in large arenas
called amphitheatres.
The most famous of these is the
Colosseum in Rome, which held up to
50,000 spectators.
During a fight, if a gladiator
became badly injured or
admitted defeat, the spectators
could decide their fate.
Gladiators were placed in different groups
depending on their skill level, experience
and weaponry speciality. Thraeces and
Murmillones were the most popular
groups.
They fought with swords and shields.
Most gladiators only lived to their mid-
20s. However, if they were successful and won
many fights, they could become wealthy and
popular.
Some became celebrities of their time.
Venatores and Bestiarii were
special groups of gladiators who
fought animals including deer,
ostriches, lions, crocodiles,
bears and elephants.
