Take a card and ask the WHAT DO YOU class about ancient REMEMBER romans. ABOUT THE ANCIENT ROMANS? GLADIATORS DICTIONARY 'Gladius' is the latin word for 'sword'. It is thought that this is the root of the word 'gladiator' . Gladiators were warriors who were trained to fight in order to entertain crowds of people. They would fight other gladiators, sometimes to the death. The clothing of a gladiator was usually minimal. Sheilds and helmets were use for protection. Sandals and a canvas loincloth, called a subligaculum, were worn. Most gladiators were criminals, prisoners of war or slaves, chosen for their strength and skill, although some people volunteered to fight. A If they survive for 3 years, a gladiator who started as a slave could win his freedom. Gladiators were trained at special schools called ludi, where they were taught different fighting styles, and how to use a range of weapons. They received 3 meals a day and medical attention if needed. Gladiator fights took part in large arenas called amphitheatres. The most famous of these is the Colosseum in Rome, which held up to 50,000 spectators. During a fight, if a gladiator became badly injured or admitted defeat, the spectators could decide their fate. Gladiators were placed in different groups depending on their skill level, experience and weaponry speciality. Thraeces and Murmillones were the most popular groups. They fought with swords and shields. Most gladiators only lived to their mid- 20s. However, if they were successful and won many fights, they could become wealthy and popular. Some became celebrities of their time. Venatores and Bestiarii were special groups of gladiators who fought animals including deer, ostriches, lions, crocodiles, bears and elephants.
