Dual Side Stick Input Indicators and Warning - SOP

Introduction

• The basic task sharing principle for any aircraft operation is


that one pilot is PF at a time.
• Should the PNF disagree with the PF inputs, he/she has to
verbally request corrective actions or, if deemed necessary,
to take over the controls by clearly “announcing “I have
controls”, meaning: he/she becomes PF from that moment
and the other pilot PNF.

• Feedback gained from line operations monitoring indicate


that dual inputs still occur periodically.
• Dual input are also sometimes involved in operational
incidents analyzed by Airbus.

Introduction

REMINDER

• Airbus offers, as an option, a package of dual input


indicators and warning, which operate when both side
sticks are deflected simultaneously.
• This package contains visual indications and an aural
warning.

• Both visual and aural warnings have proved to be efficient


means to inform the pilot of dual inputs, even in stress
situations.

Operational Description

Dual input threshold

• A dual input situation is detected when both side sticks


are deflected simultaneously by more than 2° for
more than 500 ms.
• Why these levels ?
 No significant effect on the trajectory below 2° deflection

 500 ms confirmation prevents spurious indications


( PF change, use of Push To Talk switch, …).

Operational Description

Visual indication
• When a dual input situation is detected, the 2 green
priority lights flash simultaneously.

Operational Description

Visual indication

• The current side stick priority indications on the glare


shield lights are unchanged.

• In case of simultaneous pilot actions on the side stick, the


green CPT and F/O lights flash green simultaneously while
the 2 pilot’s inputs are added.

Operational Description

Aural warning
• 500 ms after the visual indication has been triggered a
synthetic voice “DUAL INPUT” comes up, every 5
sec. as long as the dual input condition persists.
• This audio has the lowest priority among the synthetic
voice audio alerts.

Operational Description

Summary
• The visual indication is an advisory of a dual input
situation.

• The synthetic voice is an aural warning of a dual


input
situation.

• The visual and audio indications are designed to provide


the crew with a progressive alert.

Technical Description

The dual input indicators requires Flight Control and Flight


Warning computer software changes; specific for SA and LR
Airbus families.

 On A319/A320/A321
• The FCDC (Flight Control Data Concentrator) provides
the logic to activate flashing lights in case of dual side

• The FWC (Flight Warning Computer) generates the
aural “DUAL INPUT” aural warning using the same
algorithm as the FCDC.

Technical Description

On A330/A340
• The FCDC (Flight Control Data Concentrator)
provides the logic to activate flashing lights in case of
dual side stick input and transmits this information to
the FWC.
• The FWC (Flight Warning Computer) generates the
aural “DUAL INPUT” warning.

 On A319/A320/A321 :
 FWC E2 standard (SB : 31-1106) + FWC pin program
for the aural “DUAL INPUT” (SB : 31-1115)
 FCDC 53 standard (SB : 27-1070) + FCDC pin program
for the light activation (SB : 27-1113)
 Alternative solution, if FCDC 53 is not installed :
- SEC 98 embodies provision to trigger the logic by
simple wiring modification (SB : 27- 1104)
 On A330/A340 :
 FWC K3.1/L7 standard (SB : 31-4042)

Crew Training

 The activation of these dual input warnings has no


repercussion in term of:
 Crew training
 Mixed fleet flying
 Experience has shown, that these warnings very effectively
helped to:
 “Educate” the pilots to respect the basic task sharing
principle
 Reduce drastically the number of dual input occurrences.

Conclusion

Implementation policy :
 The Airbus policy is to propose the visual and aural
dual input warnings as a single package on
customer request.
 Airbus customers that still have Airbus aircraft flying
without dual input indications and warning should
envisage the retrofit of these devices.
