7.1 Digital Citizenship vs. Global Citizenship
Social Responsibility
An ethical theory in which individuals are accountable
for fulfilling their civic duty, and the
actions of an individual must benefit the whole of
society. In this way, there must be a balance
between economic growth and the welfare of society
and the environment. The theory of social
responsibility is built on a system of ethics, in which
decisions and actions must be ethically validated
before proceeding.
If the action or decision causes harm to society or
the environment, then it would
be considered to be socially irresponsible. Moral
values that are inherent in society create a
distinction between right and wrong. In this way,
social fairness is believed (by most) to be in the
“right”, but more frequently than not this “fairness”
is absent. Every individual has a responsibility to
act in manner that is beneficial to society and not
solely to the individual.
Global Citizenship vs Digital Citizenship
➢ Global citizenship
It is about recognizing and respecting diversity.
Teaching is about building relationships,
fostering productive connections with
colleagues and students is part of any
educator’s success.
The role of the global digital teacher is to bring
understanding and harmony into such
situations.

9 Elements of Digital Citizenship
1.Digital access - refers to the amount and equity of access students
have to technology. Not every student has a personal device or
internet at home, which is a reality that educators should be aware
of as technology use becomes standard in the classroom.
2. Digital commerce - the buying and selling of items online. It is
necessary to understand the tools and safeguards in place when
exchanging in the digital space, whether it is actual items or
intellectual property.
3. Digital communication and collaboration - refer to sharing
information, expressing thoughts,
and managing relationships online.
4. Digital etiquette - covers the rules of conduct when
interacting in the digital world. Establishing standards
and expectations help students be more aware of
themselves and others online.
5. Digital fluency or literacy - refers to the process of
understanding technology, including thinking critically
about content, discerning fact from fiction, and making
good media consumption choices.
6. Digital health and welfare - describe the physical and
psychological implications of technology. This element
includes relevant topics like screen time and
cyberbullying.
