Presenting A Research Proposal

Heavenly Father, thank you for this time we've had to learn and grow together. Bless all who are seeking to better understand how to effectively communicate important ideas and information to others. May the skills discussed help each person present their ideas in a clear, organized, and persuasive way. Give us wisdom to know how to engage respectfully with our audience, whether in person or online. And help us always to use our talents to spread messages that uplift and unite, rather than divide. We ask this in Jesus' name, Amen.

Presenting a Research Proposal

Ronald S. Go, LPT, PhD

The Communicator’s Prayer
Praised be Jesus Christ, now and forever!
In the name of the Father…

Holy Spirit, you blessed the first disciples with the power to
spread God’s love throughout the world.
Give us a new power to proclaim your word through our
own unique gifts and through the channels of clear
communication.
Make us willing to receive that word as it enters our daily
lives.
Bless all who use their talents in the field of
communication.
Guide those who send out the message and those who
receive it, so that all people may come to know your
truth.

That in all things, God may be glorified!

In the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit. Amen.
.
Reminders

Update your EOWs regularly.

Your Thesis Proposal should have been submitted
on MSTeams. (This will be recorded as your Long
Test).

Mock Presentation of Thesis Proposal (to be
recorded as Mini Task) will be done per channel
during the asynch session.

Writing a Research Proposal
 Goals and Objectives of a Research Proposal
 Thesis Writing Format
 Parts of a Research Proposal
Remember...

A research proposal has two main goals:
1. To present and justify the need to study a research
problem;
2. To present the practical ways in which the proposed
study should be conducted.
Today’s Topics

Presenting a Research Proposal

Oral Presentation Tips and Guide
Jumpstart

Why do you need to present a research
proposal before data collection?
Presenting a Research Proposal
What are the Goals of Presenting
a Research Proposal?

To convey information

To persuade the audience
Persuading the Audience

You persuade the audience that the study is
WORTH doing.

And that you are CAPABLE of carrying it out.
How do you Persuade the
Audience?

Explain the reasons why the study is conducted
 Relevance
 Timeliness
 Usefulness
...

Discuss how the study is going to be conducted.
 Clear step-by-step procedure
 Availability of resources (facilities, equipment, materials, research locale,
respondents, etc.)
 Data to be collected
 Ways to analyze the data
 Expected Outputs
 Timeline

Be REALISTIC, not too AMBITIOUS.
In 15 minutes, you should...

Give sufficient background information for everyone
to understand your research proposal.

Justify the need to conduct the study.

State the research problem/ objectives of the study.

Explain the benefits of the study.

Discuss the project details and methods.
Presentation Tips

The slides are not the presentation – YOU are!

Use the principles of visual design.

Follow the 7 x 7 rule.

Use appropriate technology.

Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse
...

Engage with the audience.

Do not just read your speech/slides.

Use bullets and numbers.

Do not write an entire paragraph in slides.

Use light colors and simple color combinations.

Font size, color, and style should be readable.
Dividing up the Presentation

Each presenter should speak roughly the same
amount of time.

Change in speakers signals change in
topic/section.

Keep shifts to a minimum because it can
distract the audience.
...

Do not interrupt each other.

Rehearse as a team.

Note the timing of the presentation.

Practice Q and A.

Come early.

Work as a TEAM.
Oral Presentation Tips and
Guide
Fear of Public Speaking

Oral presentation is one of the world’s
most common phobias.

40% of Americans say that public
speaking is their biggest fear.
Things to Think About

The audience only captures 20% to 40% of a lecture’s
main ideas.

Think about what you want to achieve
 Inform
 Persuade

Think about your audience (knowledge, interests,
expectations).
In Presenting your Research Proposal

Begin with a bang.

Listeners tend to remember what they hear first and last.
 Begin with a question.
 Begin with a startling statement.
 Begin with a provocative quotation.
 Begin with a surprising statistics.
 Explain to them why they “need to know” about your
topic and why they should care.
...

State your purpose.

Have explicit transitions.
 I’m going to talk about...
 I'd like to start by….
 This morning I want to explain...
 I will concentrate on the following points: First of all…
Then…
...

Present your main points one by one in logical
order.

Talk to your audience while delivering your
presentation.

Keep your language simple. (Your goal is to
communicate, not to show off your vocabulary.)
...

Don’t rush!

Speaking fast doesn’t make you seem
smarter, it will only make it harder for other
people to understand you.
Dealing with Nervousness

Confess that you are nervous!

Your audience will be very sympathetic—they know
how you are feeling.

Treat your audience like friends.

When you are talking to your friends, you naturally
use your hands, your facial expressions, and your
body to add to your communication.
...

The way you perform is the way your
audience will feel.

Try not to impress your audience because
you can never impress someone whose
intention is to critic.
Remember

There is NO MAGIC FORMULA in
effective oral presentation; one size
doesn’t fit all.

The success of your presentation depends
on you, your audience, and the research
material, among many other factors.
