Source 1 – Lenin’s Testament. This is often used as evidence that Stalin was an

Communists as well. It was never published in Russia, although, if it had been, it
would certainly have damaged Stalin.

hands and I am not sure whether he will always be capable of using that authority
with sufficient caution.
Comrade Trotsky, on the other hand, is distinguished not only by his outstanding
ability. He is personally probably the most capable man in the present Central
Committee, but he has displayed excessive self-assurance and preoccupation with
the purely administrative side of the work.”

Source 2 – Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Gulag Archipelago, published in 1973.


Solzhenitsyn lost his Soviet citizenship as a result of this book.
A tribute to Comrade Stalin was called for. Of course, everyone stood up… for three
minutes, four minutes, the ‘stormy applause, rising to an ovation’ continued… Who
would dare to be the first to stop? After all, NKVD men were standing in the hall
waiting to see who quit first! After 11 minutes the director [of the factory]…sat
down… To a man, everyone else stopped dead and sat down. They had been saved!
