    Forces are pushes or pulls that can cause objects to move, change speed or direction. Forces cannot be seen directly but their effects can. Common forces include gravity, which pulls objects toward Earth, and friction, which acts against motion. Balanced forces have a net force of zero and do not change an object's motion, while unbalanced forces produce changes in motion.

    FORCE

    FORCE IS A
    PUSH OR PULL

    Forces can cause an object to


    move, change speed, change
    direction, change shape, or stop.
    Cannot be seen but
    the effect can be seen.
    Measured in Newtons (N)
    When you drop your
    pencil, gravity is pulling
    it to the ground.
    When you are walking around,
    your feet are pushing down on
    to the ground
    NET FORCE
    The size of all the forces acting on an object

    * If two forces acting on an object are in the SAME direction, you


    ADD the forces together.

    *If two forces acting on an object are in the OPPOSITE direction,


    you SUBTRACT the forces.
    N = 500N – 450N
    = 50N to the right
    BALANCED
    FORCES
    • Forces that cancel each other out.
    • Net Force = ZERO
    • There is no change in motion.
    UNBALANCED FORCES

    • When forces acting on an


    object do not cancel out
    • Net Force ≠ ZERO
    • Produce a change in motion

    AGAINST MOTION

    If you kick a soccer ball


    on a grass, what will
    start to slow it down?
    FRICTION
    • The enemy of motion
    • A force occurs when two objects rub against each other
    • Always acts in the direction opposite to the direction of motion
    • Will slow the motion of an object or stop it
    GRAVITY
    • An invisible downward force that pulls
    objects toward each other. Earth's gravity is
    what keeps you on the ground and what
    makes things fall.
    • LAW OF GRAVITATIONAL FORCE:
    The force of gravity depends on the distance
    between the objects and their masses
    MASS
    The amount of matter in an object

    WEIGHT
    Measure of the force of gravity on an
    object
    Air resistance slows objects down
    An object’s weight can change
    from its weight to the Earth
    from the moon, but its mass
    would stay the same
    Your weight on the
    Moon is 16.5% what you
    would experience on
    Earth. In other words, if
    you weighed 100 kg on
    Earth, you would weigh
    a mere 16.5 kg on the
    Moon
