What is CNC?
• In machining, numerical control, also called computer numerical control (CNC), is
the automated control of tools by means of a computer. It is used to operate tools such
as drills, lathes, mills, grinders, routers and 3D printers.
• CNC transforms a piece of material (metal, plastic, wood, ceramic, stone, etc...) into a specified
shape by following coded programmed instructions and without a manual operator directly
controlling the machining operation.
What is a CNC machine?
• A CNC machine is a motorized maneuverable tool and often a motorized maneuverable platform,
which are both controlled by a computer, according to specific input instructions.
• Instructions are delivered to a CNC machine in the form of a sequential program of machine
control instructions such as G-code and M-code, and then executed. The program can be written
by a person or, far more often, generated by graphical computer-aided design (CAD) or computer-
aided manufacturing (CAM) software. In the case of 3D printers, the part to be printed is "sliced"
before the instructions (or the program) are generated. 3D printers also use G-Code.
Benefits of CNC?
• CNC offers greatly increased productivity over non-computerized machining for repetitive
production, where the machine must be manually controlled (e.g. using devices such as hand
wheels or levers) or mechanically controlled by pre-fabricated pattern guides.
• Since any particular component might require the use of several different tools – drills, saws, etc…
modern machines often combine multiple tools into a single "cell". In other installations, several
different machines are used with an external controller and human or robotic operators that move
the component from machine to machine.
History of CNC.
• The first CNC machines were built in the 1940s and 1950s, based on existing tools that were
modified with motors that moved the tool or part to follow points fed into the system on punched
tape. These early servomechanisms were rapidly augmented with analog and digital computers,
creating the modern CNC machine tools that have revolutionized machining processes.
CNC in the aerospace industry.
• Aerospace CNC machining is now one of the most critical components of the industry.
• Aerospace CNC machining involves using computer-aided tools and components to produce and
maintain aircraft and space parts.
• The extremely high level of precision needed within the aerospace industry makes CNC
machining a suitable manufacturing process for the industry.
CNC in military use.
• While CNC machines have been used in military applications since their inception, modern mills
and drills offer something unique that most other manufacturing technologies cannot match. The
precision alone allows for far more novel military applications.
• Detection systems and communication devices are always necessary for defense and military
facilities. As such, providing and maintaining them has always been the remit of the latest in
manufacturing technologies. This is another area where CNC machining can excel when used as a
bulwark for the military’s operational needs.
• A CNC Machine is, ultimately, capable of producing a consistently durable defense component.
With that being said, this manufacturing procedure is the go-to choice for military applications.
CNC in the food industry.
• Operating standards in the food industry have changed dramatically over the past few decades due
to more regulations on food contaminants, pathogens, and allergens.
• The food industry nowadays needs the highest quality components and equipment, which means
CNC machining is getting more and more attention in the food industry.
Conclusion.
• CNC is useful and good. We should use more of it.
