WHAT IS A
VALUE
◦ Values are beliefs about what is important in
life.
◦ No agreement on the exact nature of values.
◦ Values have been conceptualized as needs,
beliefs, personality types, preferences, goals,
interests, mental entities etc.

TERMINAL VALUES- Desirable end states of existence, the goals that a person would like to achieve
during his or her lifetime
INSTRUMENTAL VALUES- Preferable modes of behavior or means of achieving one’s terminal
values.
ATTITUDE
ATTITUDE-
MEANING
◦ Thurstone said, “An attitude denotes the
total of man’s inclinations and feelings,
prejudice or bias, preconceived notions,
ideas, fears, threats, and other any
specific topic.”
◦ According to N.L. Munn, “Attitudes are
learned predispositions towards aspects
of our environment. They may be
positively or negatively directed towards
certain people, service, or institution.”
FEATURES OF ATTITUDE
◦ Attitude are predispositions of purpose, interest or
opinion of the person to assess some objects in a
favorable or an unfavorable manner.
◦ Attitude are different from values: Values are the
ideals, whereas attitudes are narrow, they are our
feelings.
◦ Attitude are evaluative statements: either favorable
or unfavorable concerning the objects, people or
events.
◦ Attitude influence human behavior- A positive
attitude towards a thing will influence human
behavior towards the thing favorably and vice-versa.
◦ Attitude have intensity- It refers to the strength of
the effective component. For example, we may
dislike an individual, but the extent of our disliking
would determine the intensity of our attitude
towards the person.
