Multiplying Decimals

WEEK 5 -DAY 1
Review:
Do you know how to multiply
numbers?

Let’s Discuss About it!

Multiplying decimals up to 2 decimal places
by 1 to 2-digit whole numbers
To multiply decimals:
- Multiply decimals the way you multiply
whole numbers.
- Next, determine where to put the decimal
point in the product by counting the number of
decimal places in the factors.
- Decimal places are places to the right
of the decimal point.
- The product must have the same
number of decimal places as the sum
of the number of decimal places in the
factors.
Consider the examples:

Example #1:

3.2 x 4 = N

N is the product.
Multiply as with whole numbers. Write
numbers in a column and regroup if
necessary.

3.22
3
x 4
128
Count the number of decimal places
in the factors.

3.2 1 decimal place

x 4
128
Place the decimal point in the product. The
decimal point place in the product is equal to the
total number of decimal places in the factors. Start
Counting from right to left then place the decimal
point.

3.2
x 4
12.8 1 decimal place
Example #2
Read and analyze the problem below.

If a notebook costs ₱ 5.25, how much

is the cost of 6 notebooks?

5.25 x 6 = N
Solution:
1 3
5.25 2 decimal place

x 6
31. 5 0 2 decimal place

Count the number of decimal places in the factors.

Do It!
Find the product:
1. 4.2 x 8 = 33.6
2. 6.3 x 4 = 25.2
Find the product. Write your answers in your notebook.

51.48 37.41 117.6

132.15 140.14
You are going to buy 3 sets of food
amounting 12.6 each set. How much money
will you pay for the sets of food?

12.6 x 3 = 37.8 pesos

weighs 4 kilos. The pumpkin is priced at
Php54.75 per kilo. How much is the
total cost of the pumpkin?
We discussed yesterday about on how we multiply
decimals. The following are the steps in
multiplying decimals:

To multiply decimals:
- Multiply decimals the way you multiply whole
numbers.
- Next, determine where to put the decimal point in
the product by counting the number of decimal places
in the factors.
- Decimal places are places to the right
of the decimal point.
- The product must have the same
number of decimal places as the sum
of the number of decimal places in the
factors.
Solution for the problem:

1 3 2
54.75 2 decimal place

x 4
21 9.00 2 decimal place
Consider the examples:

Example #1:

45.6 x 5 = N Answer: 228.0

Example #2:
34.8 x 12 = N Answer: 417.6

Read the problem below.

Carlo needs to buy his medicine every

week. His medicine cost ₱ 89.96 each
week. If he buys his medicine for 4
weeks, how much money will he need
for his medicine?
Solution:
3 3 2

x 4
359.84 2 decimal place
Another Examples:

Example #1:

If 637 x 18 = 10276, what is the product

of 63.7 x 18?
Step 1. Multiply the decimals like
multiplying whole numbers,
starting from the rightmost digit
going to the left. (To get the first
partial product, multiply 63.7 by
8, then for the second partial
product, multiply 63.7 by 1.
Step 2. Since you have two
multiples, you will have
two partial products.

Step 3. Add the partial products and put the

decimal point in proper place.
Consider the other examples:

The following are some items that you need to buy

from a store:
a pair of socks -₱20.95
handkerchief - ₱24.25
t-shirt - ₱119.50
shorts - ₱52.30
face towel - ₱8.75
How much money must you have to be able
to buy the following:
1. three pairs of socks
Solution:
20.95 x 3 = N
Answer: 62.85 pesos
2. two t-shirts
Solution:
119.50 x 2 = N
Answer: 239.00 pesos
3. five face towels
Solution:
8.75 x 5 = N
Answer: 43.75 pesos
4. seven handkerchiefs
Solution:
24.25 x 7 = N
Answer: 169.75 pesos
5. three shorts
Solution:
52.30 x 3 = N
Answer: 156.90 pesos
Directions: Write the equation in a
column form (long method) then solve
the following to get the product. Show
your solution.

1. 0.16 x 4 =
2. 3.21 x 8 =
3. 61.75 x 6 =

3. 0.8 x 7 =
Read the problem below.

Health professionals suggest that a person

must have a calcium intake of at least 1.25
mg a day to avoid bone loss or osteoporosis.
How many milligrams do we need to take a
week?
Guide Questions for the given problem:

1. What do health professionals suggest to

take every day to avoid bone loss?
2. How many milligrams of calcium must
we take per day?
3. Is it possible for us to follow this
prescription? Why?
4. What are the food that rich in
calcium?
5. How many milligrams of calcium
must we take in a week?
6. How to solve for the calcium intake for a week?

Solution:
Multiply decimals like multiplying whole numbers,
starting from the rightmost digit going to the left.
(multiply 7 by 5, 7 by 2, and 7 by 1).
Place the decimal point to the
product by counting and placing the
same decimal places presented in
the given factors. In the given
situation, two decimal places are
presented in the factors. The
product must also have two decimal
places.
Therefore: we must take 8.75 mg of
calcium a week.
Other Example:

Get the product of 2.34 x 42 = N

Multiply decimals like
multiplying whole numbers,
2.34 starting from the rightmost
digit going to the left. (to get
X 42 the first partial product,
multiply 2.34 by 2, then for
the second partial product,
multiply 2.34 by 4.
Other Example:

Get the product of 2.34 x 42 = N

Since you have two multiples,

2.34 you will have two partial
X 42 products. Second partial
468 product will be intended to
the left as shown.
936
Other Example:

Get the product of 2.34 x 42 = N

2.34
X 42 Add the partial products and
468 put the decimal point in
proper place.
