The narrator ( Marga Minco)
Margo Minco is a Jewish girl who faced the pain,
sufferings, and losses, including the irreparable loss of
her dear mother in war. She is a brave and courageous
girl who faces the challenges of a lonely life after the
war is over. She is attached to her mother’s things and
after returning to her home-city, she goes to Mrs.
Dorling to claim her mother’s things back. Mrs. Dorling’s
cold, indifferent and discouraging behavior further
depresses her. She had already suffered many losses,
including the irreparable loss of her dear mother.
Finally she decides to leave her mother’s things and
forget them forever as the things will evoke her
mother’s memories more often and make her more
miserable.
Mrs.’S (the narrators
mother)
Mrs. S was a great Jew woman who became victim
of war. She had been living peacefully in Holland
with her daughter, the author when they had to
leave in hurry to save their life. Mrs. S was a
perfect homemaker. She had an admirable
collection of household things such as crockery,
cutlery, and upholstery. She took meticulous care of
them, and often cleaned them. Mrs. S had given her
precious and expensive household things to Mrs.
Dorling with the intention of taking them back after
the war was over. The unfortunate Mrs. S didn't
live long enough to go back to Holland, and claim her
things back from Mrs. Dorling.
Mrs. Dorling (the narrator’s
neighbour)
Mrs. Dorling's was a neighbour long time ago of the
Narrator of the story. The narrator, a young
woman went to Mrs. Dorling's house in Holland to
fetch her belongings back from Mrs. Dorling's
house. She lived in Holland. That was during the
1940s. Mrs. Dorling showed her bad character. She
was a thief. She used the belongings like clothes,
utensils etc. of the author and author's mother,
in spite of promising to take a good care of them.
The was untruthful, dishonest and cheating. Also
she did not take care of those belongings in a
proper way. So she was careless and rude too . She
was bad in that she did not invite the narrator into
her house and treat her like a good guest.
Mrs. Dorling’s daughter
Mrs Dorling's daughter was not like her.
She was of kind nature and was also very
gentle to guests. This was known when she
offered tea to the narrator and described
her about things kept in the room. She was
also kind hearted and told narrator to wait
at her house until her mother comes. She
also sat with her and they had a good
conversation.
