TP - IELTS Speaking Part 3

Here are some sample answers using the techniques discussed: If fast food becomes more popular and affordable, people may eat more of it. This could potentially lead to weight gain issues. However, if governments promote healthy eating and exercise more effectively, this may help offset these trends. Overall, future eating habits are hard to predict and much will depend on cultural, economic and policy factors.

IELTS Speaking

• Part 1 – General questions about your job,

studies, hometown, hobbies, sport etc. Uses a
lot of ‘Present Simple’.

• Part 2 – Two minute talk about a subject. Often

(but not always) about something in the past.

• Part 3 – Questions about the subject in Part 2.

IELTS Speaking Part 3
In IELTS Speaking Part 3 you are expected to give longer answers about more abstract issues
and ideas. With a partner, ask and answer the following IELTS Speaking Part 3 questions:

Eating habits
• Tell me about the types of food that people
eat in your country.
• How are the eating habits now in your country
different from eating habits in the past?
• How healthy is your country’s food?
• Why do you think different cultures have
different table manners?
• How may eating habits change in coming
decades?
IELTS Speaking Part 3: Longer Answers
Here are 3 techniques to help you give longer,
more detailed answers:

• Keep asking yourself "why?“

• Explain the alternatives

• Give an example
IELTS Speaking Part 3 – Longer Answers
Do you think that school children should be encouraged to have their own ideas,
or is it more important for them to learn what their teachers give them?

• Answer:
I think that we should definitely allow children to be
creative and have their own ideas. (Why?)
• I believe children must develop the ability to think for
themselves and solve problems … (Why?)
• … because as adults they won’t always have somebody to
guide them or tell them what to do. (Alternatives?)
• If we don't allow children to have their own ideas, they
will be less successful in the adult world; they will be too
reliant on others. (Example?)
• A doctor, for example, might encounter a situation that he
or she hasn't been trained for, but will still be expected to
make a decision that could save someone's life.

Giving Your Opinions

• Should, Must & Have to – These are words that are useful
for talking about your opinions, saying what you think is
right or wrong, giving suggestions and talking about the
rules.

• You use ‘should’ when you think something is a good idea

and ‘shouldn’t’ when you think something is a bad idea.
This is for general advice or suggestions.

• If you feel strongly about something use ‘must’ or

‘mustn’t’.

• When talking about the rules we usually use ‘have to’.

Possibility and Probability – ‘Hedging’

• May, Might & Could – These are words that are useful
for talking about events in the future, the present or the
past.

• You use ‘may’, ‘might’ & ‘could’ when we are uncertain

about something. They’re an alternative to “is”, “will”
and “was”.

• They are useful for discussing probability and possibility.

They show you are not 100% certain about something.

• Not being certain is called ‘hedging’ and is very normal

in spoken (and written) English.

What is the difference?

Question: How may eating habits change in coming

decades?

Answer 1: Everyone will eat more and become fatter. We

must not let this happen. We must put fat people on diets
and they will all have to do exercise every day.

Answer 2: I think there may be more fast food eaten

because people are getting busier, so that might lead to an
increase in the number of obese people. If that happens it
might not just be here. For example, what has happened
in rich countries with more people putting on weight might
start happening all around the world. We may end up as
IELTS Speaking Part 3
Why should you use ‘may’ or ‘might’?

• They give you something else to say

• If you use ‘may’, then you automatically have something
else to say – ‘may not’. That’s a good thing, because
giving long answers is important in the speaking test. For
example, if you say …
• I believe that our food may get more unhealthy in the
future ….
• then you automatically have a way of continuing by
saying
• … but the opposite is also true and it’s also possible that
scientists might invent really healthy food
• This way you have twice as much to say than if you had
just said “will”. You can talk about two things and not

Conditionals

• Conditionals – These are useful ways of talking about facts,

probabilities, possibilities and even impossibilities!

• If you eat more than your body can digest, the excess food is
turned into fat. (This is a fact)

• If I exercise more, I will lose weight. (This is a probability)

• If I didn’t eat so much fast food, I wouldn’t be so fat. (This is

a possibility)

• If they hadn’t invented Kentucky Fried Chicken, I wouldn’t

have put on so much weight. (This is an impossibility – we
cannot ‘uninvent’ KFC)

• Now ask and answer some of the IELTS Part 3
questions on the handout.

• Give your opinions

• Give long answers
• Use modals
• Use conditionals
