Biometrics

This seminar presentation provides an overview of biometric technology, including its history, types, applications, and advantages. Biometrics are automated methods of recognizing individuals based on physiological or behavioral characteristics. The seminar discusses the history of biometrics beginning in 1870, describes common biometric types like fingerprints, facial recognition, and iris scanning. It also covers biometric devices, applications in security and law enforcement, and the advantages of increased security and reduced costs compared to passwords. Potential disadvantages around costs, data breaches, and bias in algorithms are also noted.

Introduction

• Biometrics are automated methods of recognizing a

person based on a physiological or behavioral
characteristic.
• Biometrics technologies measure a particular set of a
person's vital statistics in order to determine identity.
What is biometric?
• The word "biometrics" is derived from the Greek words 'bios' and
'metric';
• which means life and measurement respectively.
• This directly translates into "life measurement".
History

• The first real biometric system was created in 1870 by French

anthropologist Alphonse Bertillion and turned biometrics a
distinguished field of study.
• The first classification method for fingerprints was developed in
1892 by Sir. Francis Galton.
Types of Biometrics

• Behavioral Biometrics- Used for verification .

• Physical Biometrics- Used for either

identification or verification.
Behavioral Biometrics
•Voice Recognition
•Signature
•Keystroke
Physical Biometrics
•Fingerprint
•Facial Recognition
•Hand
•Iris recognition
•Vascular Patterns
Characteristics of Biometric
Biometric Devices
Iris Scanner Fingerprint

Face Camera Retinal Scanning

Applications

• Prevent unauthorized access to ATMs, Cellular phones

Desktop PCs
• Criminal identification
• In automobiles biometrics can replace keys with keyless
entry devices
• Airport security
Advantages

• Increase security - Provide a convenient and low-cost

additional tier of security.
• Reduce password administration costs.
• Replace hard-to-remember passwords which may be
shared or observed.
• Make it possible, automatically, to know WHO did WHAT,
WHERE and WHEN ?
Disadvantages
 Cost- Significant investment needed in biometrics
for security
 Data breaches- Biometric data base can still be
hacked
 Bias- Machine learning and algorithms
must be very advanced to minimize biometric
Conclusion
• Biometric is an emerging area with many opportunities for growth.
• Biometrics can decrease costs and increase convience.
• Increasing both privacy and identity security.
• Biometric technology is now being used in almost every area.
• Possibly in near future , you will not have to remember PINs and
passwords .
