Week11 Techniques in Arts

Art techniques are used to create artwork and give it texture, pattern, or beauty. The document discusses 10 different art techniques: painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, action painting, photography, collage, watercolor painting, stippling, and oil pastel. Each technique is briefly defined and an example is provided. Painting involves using paint on a surface, drawing uses pencil or pen on a surface, and sculpture involves shaping materials. Printmaking transfers images using matrices, and action painting applies vigorous brushstrokes. Photography records images, and collage uses overlapping materials. Watercolor gives a transparent effect, stippling uses dots, and oil pastel is a stick medium combining pigment and oil.

Painting- is the act or process of using paint. The
paint can create an artwork known as a painting, or
it can be used more practically as a protective
coating or form of decoration. Paintings are a form
of visual art that captures the expression of ideas
and emotions on a two-dimensional surface.
Ex:
Drawing - is a sketch or a picture, usually made
with a pencil or pen.
Ex:
Sculpture - Is a work of art that is produced by carving or
shaping stone, wood, clay, or other materials.

Sculptors use additive and subtractive techniques to create

sculptures. Additive means to bring materials together, while
subtractive means to take away from the base material. Four
main techniques exist in sculpting: carving, assembling,
modeling, and casting.
Examples :
Printmaking - is an artistic process based on the
principle of transferring images from a matrix onto
another surface, most often paper or fabric. Traditional
printmaking techniques include woodcut, etching,
engraving, and lithography, while modern artists have
expanded available techniques to include
screenprinting.

Ex:
Action painting - Is a direct, instinctual, and highly
dynamic kind of art that involves the spontaneous
application of vigorous, sweeping brushstrokes and
the chance effects of dripping and spilling paint onto
the canvas.
Ex:
Photography - is the process of recording an
image – a photograph – on lightsensitive film or, in
the case of digital photography, via a digital
electronic or magnetic memory.

Ex:
Collage - is an art form that is made up of overlapping
pieces of material, such as photographs, fabric,
coloured and textured paper and other types of mixed
media.

Ex:
Watercolor paint - gives off a slightly transparent effect
which is ideal for emotional or ethereal effects. The
watercolor medium allows layering of paint, and with its
translucent property, artists can layer images that will pop
up from the undersurface
Ex:
Stippling - is a drawing technique in which areas
of light and shadow are created using nothing but
dots. The basic idea is simple: For darker areas,
you apply a greater number of dots and keep
them close together. Then for progressively lighter
areas, use fewer dots and space them farther
apart.
Ex:
Oil pastels - are a painting medium that has a stick or
crayon form and combines a binder and pigments. As the
binder is created with mineral oils and waxes mixed, you
get a kind of a bit oily and soft stick. Pastel sticks and
crayons are some of the other mediums that are
comparable to oil pastel drawing.
