1.1 Functions

The document discusses functions and their representations. It defines what a function is and distinguishes functions from non-functions using graphs, tables, mappings and equations. It also discusses function notation and evaluating functions using this notation by substituting values into the function.

1 Relations and
Functions
Chapter 1.1 and 1.2
become familiar with functions and their many representations, as well
as begin to be able to draw conclusions and make generalizations
Learning Goals – We are learning:
 to write a definition for the word “function” and be able to tell a function from non-functions

 the many representations of functions

 to use function notation

Success Criteria - I will be successful when:

 I can distinguish a function from a non-function when given a graphical,
verbal, or equation representation
Overall and Specific Expectations
demonstrate an understanding of functions, their representations, and their
inverses, and make connections between the algebraic and graphical
representations of functions using transformations;
 1.1 explain the meaning of the term function, and distinguish a function from
a relation that is not a function, through investigation of linear and quadratic
relations using a variety of representations (i.e., tables of values, mapping
diagrams, graphs, function machines, equations) and strategies (e.g.,
identifying a one-to-one or many-to-one mapping; using the vertical-line test)
 1.2 represent linear and quadratic functions using function notation, given
their equations, tables of values, or graphs, and substitute into and evaluate
functions [e.g., evaluate f (1/2), given f(x) = 2x2 + 3x – 1]

Representation of Functions

 Functions can be represented in many forms.

 Graphically
 Mapping Diagram

Graphically – Vertical Line Test
Example 1
 Which of the following graphs are functions?
Mapping Diagram – use reasoning
 There should be only one arrow from each member of the domain. However,
each member of the domain can point to the same member of the range.

Equations
 Use your previous knowledge of what the graphs of certain equations are
 Or you can use a graphing calculator to help you.

𝑦 =2 𝑥 −1

𝑦 =− ( 𝑥 +1 )2 +3

𝑦 =4 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥

𝑥 + 𝑦 =1
Domain and Range Terminology:

Set Notation
Key ideas

 Can you state the domain and range of a given function?

 Can you determine whether or not we have a function?

 Can you use the vertical line test? Can you explain why the vertical line test
works?

 Can you tell if an equation is a function?

Summary

 A function is a relation in which each value of the independent variable

corresponds with only one value of the dependent variable.
 Functions can be represented in various ways: in words, a table of values, a
set of ordered pairs, a mapping diagram, a graph, or an equation.
 The domain of a relation or function is the set of all values of the independent
variable ().
 The range of a relation or function is the set of all values of the dependent variable
().
 You can use the vertical-line test to check whether a graph represents a function. A
graph represents a function if every vertical line intersects the graph in at most
one point.

Sunglasses
 The relationship between the selling price of a
new brand of sunglasses and revenue, R(s), is
represented by the function

Rs   10s 2  800s  120

and its graph at the right.
a) Determine the revenue when the selling price is
$5.

b) Explain what R(20) = 12,120 means.

c. If R(s) = 16,120, determine the selling price s.
