LCS - 2

The document provides instructions for the Fall 2023 Linear Control Systems lab at NUST. It outlines [1] lab ethics around time management, respect, and food, [2] requirements for lab manuals, reports, and attendance, [3] an introduction to Simulink for modeling and simulating systems using various blocks, and [4] two tasks involving transfer functions and analyzing system responses.

Fall 2023 – DE 42 MTS

EE - 379
Linear Control Systems
(LAB – 2)
Instructors:
Col. Dr. Kunwar Faraz
Dr. Anjum Naeem Malik
LE Hamza Sohail

Department of Mechatronics Engineering, National University of

Sciences and Technology, College of E&ME
Lab Ethics
• Just be disciplined and respectful…
Discipline includes the following:
1. Time management
2. Respecting peers, staff, faculty, and everyone
3. Turning off computers at the end of Lab.
• Attendance will be marked at the start of every lab i.e, in last 5 to 10 minutes.
• Eatables are not allowed in lab.
• All the Lab should be done in groups.
• Plagiarism is strictly prohibited.
Lab Manual
• Lab Manuals will be individual.
• Lab Manuals to be marked during the lab.
• In case of non availability in the succeeding lab, you can get it marked
before the next lab.
• Late submission of lab tasks and lab reports will not be
accommodated.
Introduction to Simulink
• SIMULINK is a graphical extension to MATLAB and simulation of
systems. In Simulink systems are drawn on the screen as block
diagrams. Many elements of block diagram are available such as
transfer functions, summing junctions etc. as well as virtual input and
output devices such as function generator and oscilloscopes.
• Simulink is a graphical extension to MATLAB used for MODELLING and
SMULATION of systems Different blocks are used to make a complete
system Many different blocks are available, such as summing blocks,
transfer functions etc.
• We will use these blocks to model and simulate different systems.
SIMULINK

• A window will open with different

options in it to save and to open any
file etc. Click on the “Blank Model”
option. A new Simulink model looks
like
Solving ODEs
• X’ = 2sin3t - 4X
Blocks used above
• Sum block
• Integrator
• gain block
• Input (sine wave function)
• Output(Scope)
Blocks used above
Block commonly used
• Sum block
• Integrator
• Derivative
• Gain
• Scope(output)
• Step (input)
Hydraulic Systems
Basic Building Blocks
• In fluid systems there are three basic building blocks: Resistance, capacitance and
inertance
• The relation between volume rate of flow of liquid(q) through the resistive element
and resulting pressure difference(p1-p2) is given by
𝑝1−𝑝2=𝑅𝑞
• Here R is hydraulic resistance.
• Hydraulic Capacitance is defined as
𝐶=𝐴/(𝜌𝑔)
→𝑞1−𝑞2=𝐶𝑑𝑝/𝑑𝑇
• 𝑝1−𝑝2=𝐼𝑑𝑞/𝑑𝑇
Thus Hydraulic Inertance is
𝐼𝑑𝑞/𝑑𝑇

Hydraulic Systems
Transfer Function
• System Representation
• Output by input.
• Response of the system
Finding the transfer function
• Find what is output and input.
• In case of above example of hydraulic system, input flow rate is input
and output is height(level of the tank).
• Transfer Function will be H(S) / q(S).
• H(S)/q(S) = 1/(As+pg/R)
• If A = 1 m^2
• Density p = 1000 Kg/m^3
• g = 9.8 m/s^2
• R = 980
• Transfer Function is 1/(s+10) for this case.
Task 1
• Consider the transfer function 1/(s^2+s+3)
• Take step signal value as 10
• Show the response
• Add gain block of last three digits of your cms ID
• Show what it changes in the response.
TASK 2
• Consider the transfer function 1/(s^2+s+3)
• Take step signal value as 10
• Show the response
• Add sum block in front of input:
• Add ‘gain’ and (‘gain plus derivative’ block through summation block)
as shown below: what happens when you change both gains?
