Denary
Number 8’s (23) 4’s (22) 2’s (21) Units (20)
5 0 1 0 1
4 0 1 0 0
6 0 1 1 0
8 1 0 0 0
10 1 0 1 0
Converting denary to binary
• We look at our number and find the biggest numbered column that will go
into our number.
• We put a 1 in this column and then we subtract this number from the total.
• We repeat this until our total reaches 0.
• We then put a 0 in every other column

Your turn
Using the table from the last slide convert the following numbers into binary:
•3 8 (23) 4 (22) 2 (21) 1 (20)
• 15
•8
•7
Challenge: Have a go at these. You will need more than 4 binary digits.

Converting from binary into denary
• We look at our number and put it into our table.
• We look in every column with a 1 and add up the numbers we have.
• The total is then our answer.

• Show them green, amber or red cards in your planner based on how effective
you think their poster is.
Green: The poster explains fully what binary is and how to complete
conversions.
Amber: The poster explains what binary is and partially how to complete
conversions.
Red: The poster does not explain what binary is or how to complete
conversions
