Java Classes - Objects

This document provides an overview of key concepts in Java including classes, objects, attributes, methods, constructors, and modifiers. It explains how to create classes and objects, work with multiple classes and objects, modify attributes, add parameters to methods and constructors, and use different access modifiers like public, private, and static.

Classes, Objects, Attributes, Methods, Constructors , Modifiers

Creating a class
• Create a class with a variable x

• Create an object called “myObj” and print the value of x;

Multiple Objects
• You can create multiple objects of one class.
• Create two objects of Main
Multiple Classes
• You can also create an object of a class and access it in another class.
• This is often used for better organization of classes
 one class - has all the attributes and methods
 other class - holds the main() method (code to be executed)

Main.java Second.java
Attributes
Attributes are variables within a class.
• Create a class with two attributes

• Create an object and print the value of the attributes

Modify Attributes
• Modify the value of x to 25;
Multiple Objects
• If you create multiple objects of one class, you can change the attribute values in
one object, without affecting the attribute values in the other:
• Ex. Change the value of x to 25 in myObj2, and leave x in myObj1 unchanged
Multiple Attributes
• Create attributes for first name, last name and age then display the attributes.
Methods
Methods are declared within a class, and they are used to perform certain actions.
• Create a method that will display “hello world”
Difference between static and public
methods
Static method –can be accessed without Public method – can only be accessed by
creating an object of the class objects.

Java Constructors
• Constructor is a special method that is used to initialize objects .
 Constructor name must match the class name, and it cannot have a return type.
Constructor Parameters
• Ex. Adds an int y parameter to the constructor. Inside the constructor we set x to y
(x=y). When we call the constructor, we pass a parameter to the constructor (5), which
will set the value of x to 5:

Modifiers
• public keyword is an access modifier, meaning that it is used to set the access level for
classes, attributes, methods and constructors.

• We divide modifiers into two groups:

 Access Modifiers - controls the access level
 Non-Access Modifiers - do not control access level, but provides other functionality
Access modifiers
• For classes, you can use either public or default:
 public - class is accessible by any other classes
 default – class is only accessible by classes in the same package. This is used when you don’t
specify a modifier
Access modifiers
• Final : if you don't want the ability to override existing attribute values, declare
attributes as final
Static
• A static method means that it can be accessed without creating an object of the class,
unlike public:
Abstract
• An abstract method belongs to an abstract class, and it does not have a body. The body
is provided by the subclass:
