Building Materials and Construction 1

This document provides an overview of building materials and construction. It discusses the earliest known examples of stone masonry like the pyramids in Egypt. It also highlights several landmark buildings and the innovative materials used in their construction. The document outlines key factors that influence the selection of building materials, including strength, durability, appearance, availability, cost, and environmental friendliness. Examples of traditional natural building materials like adobe and cob are also presented.

Building Materials & Construction I

Arch 1171 Semester 1st By Terusaw Solomon

Architects Vs Engineers ?

“Although a building begins as an abstract, it is built in a world of materials realities.”

“ . . . the architect should have construction at least as
much at his fingers’ ends as a thinker his grammar.”

Le Corbusier, Towards a New

Architecture, 1927

Building Materials & Construction I

 Earliest known examples of
stone masonry
The Pyramids in Ciaro, Egypt.
 2.3 million Limestone blocks
• Constructed entirely with glass segments
• Height of 21.6 meters

Louvre Pyramid, Paris

By Leoh Ming Pei
crafted in soft white marble (using an
interlocking arabesque concept)

Taj Mahal, Agra, India

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
By Frank Gehry
Burj Khalifa ,Dubai
829.8 m high

 The primary structure is reinforced concert with high compressive strength

 Glass, Silicone, and Aluminum for the faced

Factors influencing selection of building
material:

•Strength
•Durability
•Appearance
•Availability and Manufacturability
•Economic /Cost effective
•Environment friendly

Building Materials & Construction I

Strength

The material should be able to carry the design loads. It should have
adequate strength to resist failure under the action of stresses caused
by load

•Dead loads
•Live loads
•Impact loads

Building Materials & Construction I

Durability
Satisfactory performance at all times

Recorded data on past performance, laboratory test results and

established practices will help assess the serviceability of materials

Building Materials & Construction I

Appearance
•Most nonstructural materials such as floor coverings, paints,
doors, windows, etc. are chosen based on aesthetic considerations.

•A concrete wall may be given different finishes depending on aesthetic

appeal.

Building Materials & Construction I

Availability/Manufacturability

•The importance of a material being available is obvious. Materials which are

not available cannot be used.

•Any other desirable qualities are useless if a material cannot be processed

into the shape required to perform its function.

Building Materials & Construction I

Cost

•Cost/economic restraint is one of the key factors governing the choice of

material.

•The material cost in a building ranges 30 to 50 percent cost of total cost

Project.

Building Materials & Construction I

Environment Friendly

Non-toxic, reusable, renewable, and/or recyclable

e.g. Bamboo and Straw, Stone, Compressed earth block, Baked earth,
rammed earth, clay

Building Materials & Construction I

• Adobe is a natural building material made from sand, clay, water, and some
kind of fibrous or organic material (sticks, straw, and/or manure), which the
builders shape into bricks using frames and dry in the sun. Adobe buildings
are similar to cob and mud brick buildings.

Building Materials & Construction I

Cob is a very old method of building with earth and straw or other fibers.

Building Materials & Construction I

• Stone is used because it is durable, strong and attractive.
