Continuous-Time Fourier Series

This document discusses continuous-time Fourier series and their application to periodic signals. It defines periodic and non-periodic signals, describes complex periodic exponentials and Fourier series representations. It provides examples of calculating Fourier coefficients and evaluating Fourier series for periodic functions. It also discusses Gibb's phenomenon, frequency spectra, mean square error, evaluating system frequency response, transmitting periodic signals through linear systems, and calculating power in periodic signals using Fourier series.

Periodic Signals
A continuous-time signal is periodic if

Where the period is the smallest value of T0 that satisfies this equation.

If we have signal:

we need to test the ratio of and to see if the ratios are rational numbers. If they are, the signal is
periodic. For example:

is periodic because 1256/628 = 2 and 1884/628 = 3.

Non-periodic Signals

is not periodic because the frequency ratio is an irrational number.

Complex Periodic Exponentials
In general, for an exponential having k times the fundamental frequency of f0 , we
have:

Thus, a linear combination of all possible harmonically related complex

exponentials can be described by the infinite summation:

The preceding equation is known as Fouries series representation of a periodic signal, can
be written in term of the real frequency f0 or the period T0 as:

Fourier Coefficients
Fourier series:

This series can be written as a sum of complex exponentials or a sum of real cosine and/or
sine functions.

Fourier coefficients:

Where we see that the integral is evaluated over one period of the periodic signal f(t). The
preceding two equations-the first, which defines the exponential form of the Fourier series
for f(t), and the second , which allows the calculations of the coeffiecients of the terms in
series-are often known as a Fourier series pair and written togehthe as:

Fourier series pair:

Cosine series:

Sine series:
• f(1)=1+i
• f(t)=sin(t)+cos(3t)
• f(-1)=1-i
• T=2
• T=2
• f(t)=(1+i)+ (1-i)
