    What are Collocations ?
    • The words which usually come together in their usage are
    called collocations.

    • These words are closely linked with each other for e.g. :-
    golden opportunity, make mistakes etc.

    • In daily business communication, nouns are usually combined


    with verbs and adjectives. For e.g. :- to hold meeting, conduct
    negotiations etc.

    Importance of using collocations
    • For improving vocabulary.

    • language will be more natural and will be easily understood.

    • Rather than a single word we can learn and use the language in
    blocks.

    • Expression of yours will be richer and there will be alternative


    ways of expressing.

    Types of Collocations
    Noun, verb, adverb or adjective maintains a connection with
    another word as in :

    • Adverb + adjective - absolutely exhausted , fully aware

    He seemed to be absolutely exhausted after this event.


    I was fully aware that there was something wrong at the
    bottom.

    • Adjective + Noun - stormy night,
    positive attitude
    We had to travel in such a stormy night.
    She is admired for her positive attitude.

    • Verb + noun – make mistake, commit suicide, make


    progress
    He makes mistakes in handling this task.
    Our country is making progress.

    verb or adjective must be followed by a preposition or a noun
    must be followed by a particular form of verb as follows:
    • Verb + preposition- depend on
    It depends on your opinion.
    • Adjective + Preposition –satisfied with
    I am satisfied with whatever I have.
    • Noun + verb- strength to lift it
    He has strength to lift it up
