Activity 3: Head – On Collision

Part A: Converging Continental Plate and

Oceanic Plate

Objectives:
1. Explain the processes that occur along convergent
boundaries.
2. Determine the consequences of colliding plates.
Guide Questions:
Q15. What type of plate is Plate
A? What about plate B? Why do
you say so?

Ans: Plate A is an oceanic plate

because it is relatively thinner
compared to plate B. While Plate B is
continental plate because it is thicker
and floats higher than the other plate
Guide Questions:
Q16. Describe what happens to
Plate A as it collides with plate
B? Why?

Ans: Plate A bends

downward because Plate
A is denser than Plate B
Guide Questions:
Q17. What do you think will
happen to the leading edge of
Plate A as it continues to move
downward? Why?

Ans: The leading edge of

plate A will start to melt
because the temperature
beneath the crust (mantle)
is higher
Guide Questions:
Q18. What do you call
this molten material?

Ans: This molten

material is called
Magma
Guide Questions:
Q19. What is formed on
top of Plate B?

Ans: Volcanoes
Guide Questions:
Q20. As the plates continue
to grind against each other,
what other geologic event
could take place?

Ans: Earthquake
Oceanic- Continental Convergence
Examples:

1. Nazca Plate subducted under South

American Plate shich form Andes Mountains
and Peru Tench

2. Subduction of Juan de Fuca Plate undert

North Amencan Plate creating Cascade Range
CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARIES
Activity 3: Head – On Collision
Part B: Convergence of Two Oceanic Plates

Objectives:
1. Explain the processes that occur along convergent
boundaries.
2. Determine the consequences of colliding plates.
Guide Questions:
Q21. What are the geologic
processes / events that will
occur because of this plate
movement?

Ans: Subduction
Earthquake, Formation
of Trenches and
Volcanoes
Guide Questions:
Q22. What geologic
features might form at the
surface of th Plate A?

Ans: Volcanoes
Guide Questions:
Q23. If the edge of Plate A
suddenly flicks upward, a large
amount of water may be
displaced. What could be formed
at the surface of the ocean?

Ans: Tsunami
Volcanic Arc

Trenches
Tsunami
(Harbor wave)

Earthquake
oceanic-oceanic convergent

- Subduction of the Pacific Plate south

of Alaska (creating the Aleutian Islands)
and under the Philippine Plate, where
it creates the Marianas Trench, the
deepest part of the ocean
Formation of
Philippine
Archipelago
Activity 3: Head – On Collision
Part C: Two Continental Plates Converging

Objectives:
1. Explain the processes that occur along convergent
boundaries.
2. Determine the consequences of colliding plates.
Guide Questions:
Q24. What happened to the strips of clay as
they were pushed from opposite ends

Ans:It buckles upward

Guide Questions:
Q25. If the strips of clay represent the Earth’s
Lithosphere, what do you think is formed in
the lithosphere?

Ans: Mountains
Guide Questions:
Q26. What other geologic event could take
place with this type of plate movement aside
from your answer in Q25?

Ans: Earthqukaes
Guide Questions:
Q26. In terms of the consequences on the
Earth’s lithosphere, how will you
differentitate this type of convergent plate
boundary with the other two?

Ans: There is no subduction and as a result

there is a formation of mountains
HIMALAYAN MOUNTAIN FORMATION
TWO CONTINENTAL CONVERGING
