Gen of Computers

There have been five generations of computers characterized by advances in technology. The first generation used vacuum tubes and filled entire rooms. The second generation used transistors and were smaller and more reliable. The third generation used integrated circuits, high-level programming languages, and mice/keyboards instead of punch cards. The fourth generation had VLSI circuits and single-chip processors, improving speed and accuracy. The fifth generation uses ULSI technology and has progressed artificial intelligence with more user-friendly and portable computers.

Generations of Computer

A generation of computers refers to a distinct era of

computer technology, characterized by a particular
type of hardware and software architecture.

Historically, there have been five generations of

computers, each marked by significant advancements
in processing power, memory capacity, and other
technological capabilities

First Generation of Computer

The period of first generation was from 1946-1959 .Here are some
of the key features of first-generation computers:
1)The primary electronic component was the vacuum tube.
2)They were enormous and often filled entire rooms.
3)High power consumption.
4)Their programs had to be manually input using punch cards or paper tape.

Second Generation of Computer

The period of second generation was from 1959-1965 .Here are
some of the key features of second-generation computers:
1)The primary electronic component was Transistor.
2)Reliable and Faster in comparison to first generation computers.
3)Smaller size and generated less heat as compared to first generation computers.
4)Supported machine and assembly languages.

Third Generation of Computer

The period of third generation was from 1965-1971. .Here are some
of the key features of third-generation computers:
1)The primary electronic component was ICs (Integrated Circuits).
2)High-level programming languages were used.
3)The punch cards were replaced with mouse and keyboards.
4)The computers are smaller ,more reliable ,faster and have high storage capacity.

Fourth Generation of Computer

The period of fourth generation was from 1971-1980 .Here are
some of the key features of fourth-generation computers:
1)These computers used a VLSI (Very Large-Scale Integration) circuit that integrates
millions of transistors.
2)They emerged single-board computer and the single-chip processor.
3)This generation of computers improved in terms of speed, accuracy and reliability.
4)Use of PCs , smaller in size and Portable .

Fifth Generation of Computer

The period of fifth generation was from 1980-Present .Here are
some of the key features of fifth-generation computers:
1)The ULSI (ultra large scale integration) technology is used.
2)In this generation’s computers, artificial intelligence has progressed.
3)It includes more user-friendly interfaces and multimedia functions.
4)Computers that are more portable and powerful and less expensive.
5)It is a Multi-processor-based system
