• One of the oldest forms of Philippine literature that emerged in the Pre-Spanish
period.
• Made up of stories about life, adventure, love, horror and humor where
one can derive lessons about lite.
SPANISH PERIOD (1565-1863)
Themes of Literature:
• Desires for Freedom
• Love of country
• Fight against colonialism and imperialism
Japanese Period
• The use of the English language was forbidden, and the use of the Filipino
language was mandated under the Japanese rule.
• The common theme during the Japanese period are nationalism, country, love,
and life in the barrios, faith, religion and the arts.
• Essays were composed to glorify the Filipinos and at the same time to
figuratively attack the Japanese.
