Passive Voice
BE + PAST PARTICIPLE
1. When the person who performs the action is not known or not important.
2. When the focus of attention is on the subject of the passive sentence.
Passive:
“The Facebook” was launched in February 2004.
The speaker probably doesn’t know who launched “The Facebook”.
The focus is on the subject (“The Facebook”)
The speaker might be interested on the date (February 2004)
Active:
Marc Zuckerberg launched “The Facebook” in February 2004.
The person who launched “The Facebook” is known and important
3. If we want to say who performs the action, we can use ‘by + person’
Passive:
“The Facebook” was launched by Marc Zuckerberg.
The focus is on the subject (“The Facebook”)
‘By + Marc Zuckerberg’ is included because it contains important information.
RESULT:
Active: Marc Zuckerberg launched “The Facebook”.
Note:
Present perfect continuous, past perfect continuous, future continuous, & future perfect continuous are rarely used in
passive.
Example:
Active: Everyone loves the game.
Passive: The game is loved by everyone.
Verbs like arrive, agree, come, cry, fall, go, happen, live, rain, sleep, etc. are called INTRANSITIVE VERBS.
