Forces

Force is important because: - It allows objects to interact with each other by causing motion, changes in motion, or changes in shape. Without forces, objects at rest would remain at rest and objects in motion would continue in motion indefinitely without any changes. - Forces underlie all interactions between objects in the physical world from the microscopic to the astronomical scale. All phenomena in physics involve forces - from the motion of planets to the behavior of atoms and molecules. - Forces are crucial in engineering and technology. Understanding of forces is required to design and analyze structures, machines, vehicles and other mechanical devices. Forces also play an important role in many areas of daily life like sports, construction, transportation etc. - Life itself would

ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING:

• There are forces acting around us.

-Can you name some?

• Force is a push or pull.

There are 2 main types of forces:
CONTACT and NON-CONTACT

CONTACT FORCES
Applied Force: A force typical push or pull, pushing
a door open, pulling a rope.

Friction: Happens when two objects rub against

each other. Friction opposes motion.
CONTACT FORCES
Normal Force: The normal force is the
support force exerted upon an object that is in
contact with another stable object. For example,
if a book is resting upon a surface, then the
surface is exerting an upward force upon the book
in order to support the weight of the book.

Air Resistance: The air resistance is a

type of frictional force that acts upon
objects as they travel through the air
CONTACT FORCES
Tension: force which is transmitted through a string rope,
cable or wire when it is pulled right by forces acting from
opposite ends
NON-CONTACT FORCES
Electromagnetic Force: A kind of non contact
force, that is exerted by an electric or
magnetic field on a charged particle.

Gravitational Force: The force of attraction

between any two objects in the universe. All
objects have gravitational force. The mass of
an object and its distance determines the
strength of its gravitational force.

GRAVITY
Mass and distance affect the
force of gravity. The greater the
mass and the closer the object,
the stronger its gravitational
pull.
Gravity How does the force of gravity
change as the mass of objects and
distance between them changes?

The force of gravity between two

objects depends on two factors:

 Mass
 Distance *Longer arrows represent a greater force of
gravity.

Why are forces important
in sports?
BEDAN VALUE- Cooperation

How do you use your force

in a meaningful way?

 How do you cooperate or work with others

to achieve a common goal?
“Kobe Bryant, a life defined by hard work.

professional basketball player. Bryant won
five NBA championships, was an 18-time All-
Star, 15-time member of the All-NBA Team, 12-
time member of the All-Defensive Team, was
named the 2008 NBA Most Valuable
Player (MVP), and was a two-time NBA Finals
MVP winner. Widely regarded as one of the
greatest players of all time.
