At the end of the lesson, the learner is expected to:
 infer that waves carry energy;
 differentiate transverse from longitudinal waves, and
mechanical from electromagnetic waves;
 define frequency, wavelength and amplitude;
 compare the characteristics of a wave;
 relate speed, frequency and wavelength;
 solve mathematical problems involving wavelength and
frequency; and
 manifest to be as sensitive as a wave to other people’s
feelings.

Waves
All waves share certain characteristics.
1. Amplitude
2. Wavelength (𝜆)
3. Frequency (f) – the number of cycles per
unit time.
- Unit is Hertz (Hz)
- 1Hz = 1 wave/second
4. Period (T) – time it takes to complete 1 wave
- Unit is seconds

5. Speed of a wave – determined by the number
of waves passing a point per second and length
of the wave.
- Speed in any given medium is constant.
- Speed = frequency x wavelength

Alex noticed that a wave passed through his
anchored boat every 3 seconds. The distance
between each crest is 27 m. What is the speed of

SUMMARY
Waves
 Waves transfer energy without transferring matter.
 Waves may be mechanical or electromagnetic.
 Waves may be transverse or longitudinal.
 Transverse waves have the following parts: crest,
trough, amplitude and wavelength.
 Longitudinal waves have the following parts:
compression and rarefaction.
 The different characteristics of waves are
frequency, period, amplitude, wavelength and
speed.
