Lesson 1:Computers & the

World Wide Web
By yours truly
What is a computer?

A computer is an electronic device that processes data to

perform various tasks. It uses a combination of hardware and
software components to input, store, process, and output
information, making it a versatile tool for a wide range of
applications.
Types of Computer

 1. *Analog Computers (around 1600s):* Invented in the 17th century, analog computers represent data using
continuous signals. They were primarily used for scientific and engineering calculations but have become
obsolete with the advent of digital computers.

 2. *Digital Computers (1930s-1940s):* The first digital computers, like the ENIAC (1946), used electronic switches
to represent data in binary form. They marked the shift from analog to digital computation, enabling more
precise calculations and data processing.

 3. *Mainframe Computers (1950s):* Evolving from early digital computers, mainframes like the IBM 700 series
(1952) were large, powerful machines used for centralized data processing in businesses and scientific
applications.
 4. *Minicomputers (1960s):* Smaller than mainframes but more powerful than personal computers,
minicomputers such as the DEC PDP-8 (1965) were widely used in research, control systems, and early computing
environments.

 5. *Personal Computers (1970s-1980s):* The Altair 8800 (1975) and IBM PC (1981) marked the rise of personal
computers, making computing accessible to individuals. They became essential for home and office use,
fostering the growth of the computer industry.

 6. *Laptops (1980s):* The first portable computers, like the Osborne 1 (1981) and the Compaq Portable (1983),
paved the way for laptops. These compact devices allowed users to carry computing power with them.

 7. *Workstations (1980s):* Workstations, exemplified by the Sun-1 (1982), were powerful computers tailored for
technical and scientific applications. They often featured advanced graphics and processing capabilities.
 8. *Servers (1980s-1990s):* Dedicated servers, like the DEC VAX (1977) and later
rack-mounted servers, became essential for managing network resources, hosting
websites, and providing various services.

 9. *Smartphones (2000s):* The iPhone (2007) revolutionized mobile computing,

combining phone functionality with powerful computing capabilities. Smartphones
are now ubiquitous, serving as personal computers in our pockets.

 10. *Tablets (2010s):* Devices like the iPad (2010) popularized tablets, offering a
touchscreen interface and portability for various tasks, bridging the gap between
laptops and smartphones.
What is the world wide web and when was it
invented?

 The World Wide Web (WWW) was invented by Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 while
working at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). The concept was
formalized in 1990, and the first website, info.cern.ch, went live in 1991.

 The World Wide Web is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via
the internet. It relies on a decentralized information structure, with web pages
linked through hyperlinks. This innovation revolutionized the way information is
shared and accessed globally, providing a user-friendly interface for navigating and
interacting with content. The WWW's development laid the foundation for the
modern internet and its widespread use in communication, commerce, education,
and various other fields.
Things you can do in the WWW

 1. Browsing Websites
 2. Communication
 3. Information Retrieval
 4. Online Shopping
 5. Entertainment
 6. Education
 7. News & Update
 8. Social networking
 9. Research and Reference
 10. Cloud share
 The World Wide Web has become an integral part of daily life, offering a diverse and dynamic digital landscape
for information exchange, communication, and interaction across the globe.
