SITUATION
• Remote areas in Zimbabwe poses life challenges like access to proper medical attention. People living in areas like Boli
in Chiredzi district and beyond, it is very difficult for children and expecting mothers. The most disadvantaged are the
pregnant mothers where more than basic medical attention is needed. For instance in Boli region only clinics are
available where minor complications are attended, first pregnancy cases are referred to Chikombedzi Hospital and
Chiredzi District Hospital respectively, and these hospital are about 200km away. Another challenge is on transport
where it can be available only in the early hours like from 3:00am to 5:00am morning and from Chiredzi Town 1:00pm
the you get there at dusk. In between these hours, donkey driven scotch carts will be available to ferry people around
and its just for short distances. This poses a bigger challenge to pregnant mothers which leads to either still birth, infant
mortality or death of the expecting mothers. This is not only faced by people around Chiredzi area but the country as a
whole.

Design brief
I am going to design a labor, delivery, and recovery room (LDR) , this is
the room that is used for your labor and birth, including the initial
hours of recovery.

DISADVANTAGES
• The structure has few and small rooms which
accommodate and serve a few number of
people.
• The building has poor circulatory arrangement
or design such that a patient who wants to be
served in the last ward has to pass through the
first wards and this can cause disturbance and
confusion.
• It has poor air circulatory system because
limited windows and exit doors.
• The structure has one entrance door which is
also used as the exit door, this makes it’s a
poor structure because a maternity ward
should have many emergency doors and more

DISADVANTAGES
• This building has poor security and it is weak because
of the material used to construct the structure.
• The structure is too small and accommodates a few
number of people.
• It has one door which is used as an exit and entrance
purpose which is an disadvantage because risks of
losing lives in a fire accident or any accident are high
ADVANTAGES
• The structure has adequate circulatory system which
makes it congestion free which is the most essential
aspect needed by any heath facility.
• The structure has rooms that have enough space for
doctors and nurses to work with comfortably
• Patients get more attention from the doctors because
the building is small such that it accommodates few
people which allows doctors and nurses to attend
each patient fairly and thoroughly

ADVANTAGES
• The building’s circulatory system is quit good and under
world class standards.
• It has an opening in between it which allows fresh air to
enter and circulate the building freely.
• It is well ventilatated because of the number of door ,
space and windows it has
