Green Computing

Green computing refers to environmentally sustainable practices related to computing resources. It aims to reduce the carbon footprint and resource usage of IT. Green computing encompasses green disposal of electronics, green design of efficient devices, green use of computers to minimize energy consumption, and green manufacturing processes. Some examples of green computing include using thin clients that rely on central servers, which require less energy than traditional desktops. While green computing can save on energy costs and reduce emissions, there are also initial high costs and performance trade-offs to consider. Overall, green computing promotes sustainable practices within the IT industry to protect the environment.

Introduction:-
Green computing, also known as green IT or sustainable
computing, refers to the environmentally responsible and resource-
efficient use of computing resources.

The rapid growth of technology has led to increased energy

consumption and environmental impact. Green computing aims to
address these concerns by promoting practices that reduce the carbon
footprint and resource usage associated with information technology.
What does green computing means?

It is the environmentally responsible and eco friendly use of

computer and their resources.
In broader terms, it is also defined as the study of

1.Green disposal
2.Green design
3.Green use
4.Green manufacture
Green
disposal

 Repurposing existing equipment or appropriately disposing

of, or recycling, unwanted electronic equipment.
Green
design

 Designing energy efficient computers, server, printers,

projector and other digital devices.
Green
Use

 Minimizing the electricity consumption of computers and their

peripheral devices and using them as eco-friendly equipment's.
Green
manufacture

 Minimizing waste during the manufacture of computers and

other subsystems to reduce the environmental impact of these
activities.
Example of green computing:-
Thin client:-
Thin clients are the devices that rely on a central server for
processing and storage , requiring less energy and resource as compared
to traditional desktop computers .
Advantages:-
 Saving Energy and Money.
 Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Environmental
impacts.
 Improving Health and Working Conditions.
 Enhancing Flexibility and Productivity.
Disadvantages:-

High start up cost.

Still in experimental stages.
Sacrifice performance for battery life .
Not for everyone
Conclusion:-

 Green computing is a crucial approach that promotes

sustainable practices in the IT industry, aiming to
reduce energy consumption, minimize e-waste, and
protect the environment.
 Green computing extends beyond energy efficiency to
encompass the entire lifecycle of IT products.
