SIMPLE PAST TENSE

PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
SIMPLE PAST TENSE

The simple past tense shows that you are talking about
something that has already happened.

Key word:
-last……
-Yesterday
-….. ago (two years ago)
Function
1. For actions that happened in the past

Menerangkan kegiatan yang telah terjadi di waktu lampau

Example:
• She came to Jakarta two years ago
• I played tennis with my father last weekend

2. For report speech

Reported speech merupakan perubahan suatu kalimat


langsung atau direct speech menjadi kalimat tidak langsung
atau indirect speech. Reported speech sendiri biasanya
digunakan untuk menyampaikan ulang apa yang dikatakan
oleh orang lain.
Example:
• She said : “I live in Solo”
She told me she lived in Solo
• My father said : “I don’t feel well
My father said he didn’t feel well

3. Conditional Sentences

Kalimat yang berisikan kondisi mengenai sebuah pengandaian,


imajinasi, atau suatu kejadian yang belum terjadi

Example:
• I would help you if I had time
• If I was a teacher, I would give lots of homework everyday
Nominal Sentences
Kalimat yang predikatnya selain kata kerja
(adjective, noun)

PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
The past continuous tense describes ongoing actions in
the past.
Menerangkan kegiatan yang sedang berlangsung di waktu
lampu
Function
1. To express actions that were ongoing in past

menyatakan kejadian yang berlangsung di masa lampau

Example:
• Two years ago, I was working at a bank in Surabaya
• They were making a coffee at this time last night.

2. Two events that happened simultaneously in the past

menunjukkan dua kejadian yang terjadi secara bersamaan di


waktu lampau. Maka dari itu, di sini diperlukan keterangan
waktu while atau when.
Example:
• I was eating while my brother was studying
• Diane was watching TV while Andy was taking a nap.
• We were busy working on our assignment when our
parents came home
