Arduino Based Smart Blind Stick Using Ultrasonic Sensor Presentation

This document describes a smart blind stick using an ultrasonic sensor and Arduino. The stick is designed to help visually impaired people safely navigate obstacles. It contains an ultrasonic sensor to detect obstacles and an Arduino microcontroller. When an obstacle is near, the sensor triggers a buzzer to alert the user and a servo motor taps the user's hand with a signal. The document outlines the components, sensor operation, block diagram, flowchart, applications, advantages like low cost and safety improvements, and future work such as adding GPS.

Introduction

 The 2011 estimations by the World Health Organization (WHO) assess that there
are 285 billion people in the world with visual weakness, 39 billion of which are
outwardly impeded and 246 with low vision.
 The proposed project called “Arduino based smart blind stick using ultrasonic
sensor” will an effective solution which incorporates latest technology of modern
science with sole purpose of solving the global problem which visually impaired
people are continuously facing in their daily routine.
 In this computerized daze stick, the ultrasonic sensor detects impediment area
when a hindrance is coming to the visually impaired man it creates a sound and the
servo engine gives a sign by contacting the blind man hand.
Components

 Ultrasonic Sensor
 Arduino Buzzer
 Arduino Servo
 OLED display Module
 Arduino Uno
Ultrasonic Sensor
 An ultrasonic sensor is an electronic device that measures the distance of a target
object by emitting ultrasonic sound waves, and converts the reflected sound into
an electrical signal.

 Ultrasonic waves travel faster than the speed of audible sound.

 In arrange to calculate the remove between the sensor and the object, the sensor
measures the time it takes between the emanation of the sound by the transmitter
to its contact with the receiver.
Calculation the formula is
D= 0.5*T*C
Here,
D = Distance
T = The time
C = The speed of sound (~ 332 meter/second)

Applications

 Help people to easily walk to destination

 Help blind people to obstacle detection

 Alert blind people about dig

 Alarm dazzle individuals approximately dig

Advantages
 The system enables the blind people to move with the same ease
confidence as sighted people
 Since the system is linked with the GSM module it can provide the
direction information.
 Having feature to left and right turn alarm signal.
 Obstacle detection with indication support.
 Auto alarming system.
 Less accident will accrued from the blind people.
 The main advantage of the system is that it can prove to be a
very low cost solution to millions of blind people worldwide.
 In a developing country like Bangladesh, there is a need for a cost-
effective solution so that most of the blind people can easily get this
smart stick to make their life a little bit easier.
Disadvantages

 Till presently, GPS can’t connect in it due to 40 meter

to alter arrange as to take after the way/ modern path.
 Little sensor back in these areas.
 Limited & fixed route to follow daily routine
 Requires charging of the battery
 If charging is not done stick can’t work.
Future Work

 Increasing the number of sensors to implement some

another applications like water, fire or smoke.
 The global positioning system GPS can be added to the device. GPS can
help to find the shortest and best path as accordingly to Google
 Caps or jackets as alternative tools to the stick can also be used to help the
blind peoples.
 It can be further enhanced by using VLSI technology to design the PCB
unit. This makes the system further more compact. Also, use of active
RFID tags will transmit the location information automatically to the PCB
unit, when the intelligent stick is in its range. The RFID sensor doesn’t
have to read it explicitly.

Conclusion

 The main focus of this project is to help blind or visually impaired people to safely-
move among obstacles and other hurdles faced by them in their daily life. It is used
to help the people with disabilities that are blind to facilitate the movement and
increase their safety.

 The project proposed the design and architecture of a new concept of Smart
Electronic Guiding Stick for blind people. The advantage of the system lies in the
fact that it can prove to be very low cost solution to millions of blind person
worldwide.
